|
|
It's been a long month without a Bay.
Today I brought home a 79 Westy. I was told by PO that it didn't have a name but lately they've been calling it Goldie. Don't know, it doesn't feel right to me so i've renamed it Taco.
Interior is in great shape and body is pretty good. I have a folder of receipts to go through tonight so I will post more info and pics tomorrow. I do know that there is a lot of rust under the windscreen and the outer rockers are starting to rust but all the structural bits are solid (i think)
here is a quick peek...

Looks pretty solid so far. Will enjoy seeing more photos, and "Taco" seems like a great name. |

ok, so a bit about how we met. I've know about this bus for a while, it was just off a main road. last week i was driving by again and noticed the newer westy parked behind it. i quickly pulled over to ask the PO if he is upgrading. now, a week later, and she is mine
This is the first auto bus i have owned and i have to say, it's no slouch. I don't race it, just wanted to test it out
the trans had some work done, engine has had work done so i hope it stays together for a little while
Here are some more pics

Wow - looks like the interior is in great shape. Too bad the body needs work, but compared to a lot of them it doesn't seem bad. Nice Westy! |

Thanks guys...
I will tackle some of the rust before it becomes my daily. Taco is now in the garage. The windscreen will be coming out, tire will go into cabinet, rockers fixed...
The one issue I foresee is installing a stereo. Nothing over the top, just a new deck and four speakers. I don't want to cut anything but at the same time, I don't want speaker boxes laying around. I will start looking through threads in a few weeks but if someone has a brilliant suggestion, please let me know.

Not true, our buses are different. I wouldn't say one is nicer than the other...
Also, as the years go by, your bus gets better. My bus will probably see a lot of grubby shoes and snotty noses so the original clean carpets, cabinets will look different next summer... _________________ 1979 Westy Auto

We took our army cadets out into the field this past weekend and I decided bring the bus, on its first outing. I felt a little guilty not leading by example but I've spent many nights under a shelter half and I am getting a bit older...
Hanging out at the big site...
The funny thing is that I was actually a bit cold at night. I never got cold in similar weather and sleeping bag when I slept in a tent. I guess I don't put out enough heat for such a big space...

Next time you take your 'Westy' to training with your Army cadets just tell them you drove your "Der Kleiner Panzer" to the field games.

engine cutting out under load - usually worse in the afternoon
Seems like I am not the only one with this problem...
ok, I've been battling with this same issue for the last couple of months. it started with one random cut-out and has gotten progressively worse. I read many posts and, as suggested a few times, used a timing light to check for spark. I found it irregular... changed points, checked dwell, timing but problem was still there. yesterday I changed the condenser with my spare used one and today it ran great. Not counting my chickens yet, but I am hoping problem is solved.
poking around the back of the bus, I've found a couple more things that will need to be addressed soon: thermostat dead, hole in rubber elbow at top of filler tube, plug wires look really old.
Also, I discovered a strange noise. when I blip the throttle inside the engine bay, i hear a metal tap, almost like spoon tapping inside a metal can. that's not really the best description of it but close. anyone have any insight? could it be the airflow sensor snapping back? _________________ 1979 Westy Auto

ok, problem solved, finally!
the engine-cutting-out-under-load problem kept getting worse and worse. I tested, changed and cleaned many components to do with the electrics with no success. I then moved to the fuel. I changed the pressure regulator... nothing. I didn't worry about the fuel filter as the problem would come and go, a clogged filter wouldn't do that, I think...
This past weekend I decided to change the fuel pump after talking to some friends that had the same issue with their mini. Problem solved!
while I was under the bus I also changed the filter, lines (Parker 300psi with quality clamps, hope they hold up) and I removed the T to the heater...
I do realize that the fuel filter could have been the culprit all along but it is nice to have a new pump under the bus anyways. Old one had push on connectors and crimped on fuel lines so it may have been original?
Nice to have daily driver that runs properly. next on the list is the thermostat... _________________ 1979 Westy Auto
