Day 4 on engine #2...so far so good, and the fuel gauge is working now. I haven't looked at engine #1 yet. Here it is at the Publix parking lot...

Yes, another long block.
Believe it or not, I ordered it from GEX (and yes, I'm prepared for the jokes). 
As I said earlier, with us putting our house on the market I'm out of time to work on it. We can't show the house with an engineless car in the driveway and an engine in pieces in the garage. Plus, I have to put rocker arms and pushrods in my Ranger's engine, so the car has to be running now. My brother and I swapped it out again last weekend.
They sent me an engine with a 1971 "U" case, with case saver inserts on all the head studs, and before shipping they called and asked me to send the flexplate to them so they could set the end play (which I checked before installation, and it was .004"). It came with an Elring gasket set, and they had the cam plug installed the right way for an automatic. So far it's running well, so we'll see.
When time allows, I'll take my build apart to see why it seized.

Hey, I'm just glad you go it going again, and can enjoy it. Sometimes you have to do what you've got to do.
In 06 I bought a custom built all "new" MOFOCO engine for my Notch. Yes, I'll bear the jokes on that one too, but it's been the car almost 10 years now without any issues other that heat soaking mechanical fuel pumps. It's also built using an early all aluminum case, which probably had a ton of machine work done before they built it. At the time, I didn't have time to rebuild a fresh engine for the 06 Invasion, and the current at the time engine was very tired. As it turned out, other things conspired, and we didn't attend the 06 Invasion. But I've been extremely happy with the engine.

Took the car to get aligned today. I took the Bentley with me, just in case. After they got it up on the rack they realized the computer didn't have specs for a 1971, so the told me they couldn't do it. I produced the Bentley, showed them the spec sheet for the front & rear end, and they said with a little surprise that would do just fine.
Then they showed me that the upper torsion arms were a little loose (the adjustment was due in about 1000 miles). I told them, "If you'll let me borrow a 13mm and a 15mm wrench, I can have that fixed in 2 minutes." They did, and I did, and then they aligned it. I like a shop who will go the extra mile!

That he didn't build his own and wrote a check for it instead would be my guess, Roy. I'd expect the same from this crowd if I just bought a done engine instead of doing it myself, too.
If you read the entire post he says he's happy with the engine. That's a huge endorsement. Be happy.

That's right, and I should mention I was happy with the work Mofoco did for me too.

They did a great job other than a couple of things. 1) I ordered the engine to be built to use FI, and there was no place for a head temp sensor, 2) the distributor drive gear was installed for a type 1, and not a type 3 and 3) it got shipped to Montana, before someone finally figured out it went west, rather than east to Michigan. The worst part was the trucking company flipped the engine upside down on the shipping pallet, causing all of the oil to spill out on the floor of the truck's trailer (the driver was pissed about that).  Fortunately I ended up running the engine on carbs, so the lack of a provision for the head temp sensor didn't come into play, and I was able to correct the "drive gear"" issue before I got too far into installing it.
I've driven that engine to several states in the middle of summer (temps around 100+ outside), and really haven't had any problems with it. I've baked 2 mechanical fuel pumps though, but that's not MOFOCO's fault, that's the aluminum cases fault. It's been a good engine.

You're absolutely right Tram, I just didn't have the time to build an engine at that time. What with sending the case out for machining, balancing the rotating assembly, then actually building the engine, there just wasn't enough time to do all that and work at my regular job, plus the extra stuff I do out of my own shop. So, in the end I basically wrote a check to have it done. I'm very pleased with it though.

Also installed new ISP West seals for the side and rear windows this week. I reused my original trim.
It's pouring tonight, so they'll get leak tested.

I was cruising down the highway at 55 today when I heard a small "pop" under the dash, and looked down to find my speedometer needle at 0. When I popped the speedo out of the dash, I tried to turn it with a screwdriver, and found that it had seized, and then the cable had snapped. Weird, since it gave no indication of trouble; it was rock steady and made no noise. As a curiousity, does anyone notice anything amiss about the part number?
I can send it to Airhead Parts to be rebuilt, but before I do, do any Samba members have any other recommendations?

Somebody was dyslexic!
I have saved a bunch of speedos that locked up with Sili Kroil. not much to "rebuild" on these, actually.

Yeah, I was thinking about applying a little heat to the drive end to see if that would free it up, and then using some type of penetrating oil. Hadn't thought of SiliKroil, though.
I like the look of late-style gauges; I've been toying with the idea of changing them.

I got my speedometer freed up, but it seized again. The wife wasn't too thrilled about using her phone as a speedometer. 
So I got an exchange rebuilt speedometer from Airhead Parts; it arrived today. It looks like new, and works just fine.
An observation --
The original speedo was geared at 0.80, but it read 5% slow when measured against GPS. This one is a 0.82 unit, and it reads perfectly accurate (this is with 165/80-15 tires).

My generator died a couple of weeks ago, and I got a rebuilt one at NAPA. I don't know who rebuilt it, but they have the correct brushes for a Type 3, with the little "ramp" on the correct side of the brush, for the brush springs to sit in.

Love this entire thread and seeing a late model square in almost constant use.
My '72 should be done soon and I can't wait. I give zero craps about not doing the engine myself. It's getting done right and will run great.
Hoping to drive mine to Alabama for the next Type III invasion from the DC area.
