I have a 1970 squareback with automatic trans and wanted to know if the oversized oil cooler in the front of the car was a stock item? It's located behind
where the spare tire goes. Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks for responding. It actually appears to be original because it has a shroud
that's attached to the body. I snap some pics.

Agree, sounds like an A/C condenser.

If by "original" you mean "factory", then no. Dealers installed A/C according to VWOA instructions, but there were still many variations.

There was a "transmission cooler" of sorts by way of the fins on the torque converter housing.

If it looks "something" like this:

Its the AC condenser. Yours will look different then mine, because I built my system. The original condenser does not work properly with R134.

It's not. As stated above, VW never equipped these cars with remote transmission or engine oil coolers. No, your car is not the one exception Smile

There were a couple US-based aftermarket companies back in the day that did make air conditioning kits specifically for VWs which were sold through the VW accessory parts system (part number starts with ZVW) and could be dealer-installed. Likely that is what you have.

VW never factory-installed air conditioning on the air-cooled cars.

I've never seen the scoop, but I have seen an electric fan mounted behind the condenser. My old 70 Square from Texas had one mounted behind the spare tire well. Unfortunately most of the rest of the AC parts were removed.

That's the what usually happens, and the worst part of it is that the internal unit with the evaporator, is the only part of the whole system that will really works well with 134a Freon. If you have that, you could get the compressor from Gilmore Enterprises, then rig up the rest by yourself cheap. Mine blows 40 degrees even when the outside temps are in the triple digits.

Yeah, that part was gone too. The under car lines were still there, as was the York compressor, but everything else was gone. Going thru the paperwork that came with the car, the engine had been replaced twice at the dealership, due to overheating. The engine had a bad rod knock when I got it running, before I pulled it, and went thru it.

From what I heard, the York compressor really put a load on the engine compared to the new compressors. I've heard of a lot of burned up engines in both Type 1 and Type 3 cars that used the York. The new compressors are supposed to put far less load on the engine. I can't really say either way because I have never used the York. However, I had to install an idle compensator on my engine, but that might be due to the fact that I have an auto transmission.
