|
|
Well I found my side marker hanging by the wires so I decided to do a permanent fix. I first got my pem-nut kit and found the insert that best fits the hole where the two plastic hooks fit. 10-24 was the best so I installed the pem-nut and I used two 10-24 stainless steel screws with red loctite to hold the base. I screwed on the covers and they are immovable.

That looks like a good, solid fix and maybe something that VW should have done in the first place. Have to admit the original design was cheap, but wouldn't call it robust by any means. |

German Industry was at one time noted for precision and craftsmanship, but I agree. They did not think that one out! Thanks you for your comment. |

The problem with having new clean and working rear side marker lights is that eventually a cop will ticket you because your front side marker "lights" don't work! _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. That doesn't always work because the cop had a bus back in the 80's and he remembers the front lights worked on his so you must have welded up the hole and pulled the wires out. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. To which he'll say,
"don't get smart boy, they're he same as the back and they're not on, what do you think, I'm stupid? You want another ticket?"
"But officer, the illuminated side reflectors are actually in the turn signal housings with their own dedicated bulbs, honest."
"That's it, you're under arrest." _________________ www.itinerant-air-cooled.com |

Good fix, I'll have to do that the next time mine falls off.
And yeah .. don't argue with the cop on the side of the road. Accept the ticket, take it to traffic court and have it thrown out when you can demonstrate (preferably with factory literature) that those have always been reflectors not marker lights. You're much less likely to get additional tickets/hauled to jail/vehicle searched/possibly shot that way... |

The makers on the left & right doors are just that...markers. They didn't come with wired lights. I thought everyone knew that... On a side profile shot of the bus at night the front & left parking/turn lights act as front side markers due to the curvature on the nose of the bus. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc

yeah, make those front reflectors marker lights. Then the officer will add, "I just saw a bus last week where those were lit up..." |

The US required cars to have either side reflectors OR lights as of 1968. This changed to requiring side reflectors AND lights in 1970. Its definitely getting to be a long time now since the law changed, and all domestic cars by the late 70s would have had pretty obvious side lights. The late 70s VW bus is somewhat an oddity, having an obvious side reflector down low where a side light would be (most cars combined them), and a small, non-obvious light up where the turn signal is located. You can see where a cop might get a little confused about what's what.
Still, many/most cars nowdays combine the side marker and turn signal assembly, so its ironic that's actually no different from our late bays. If it weren't for the reflector being down on the door, there would be no controversy. Hey, it's a conversation piece! |

I had a similar issue with my rear side lights.
I went to the my FLAPS and got some of those plastic push-in "thingies" that you use to hold trim in place Selected one that had a head size that fit inside the ring and a shaft that was snug in the hole. I just pushed them in, pressed the housing into the side of the van and I was done.
The part looks similar to this:

I think something not everyone realizes is that after about '65 or so EVERY change that VW made to their products was either to make them cheaper to produce or to make them more sellable in the US market.
Compromises had to be made.
You have to understand vehicle production on the scale that VW was involved in

Haha, when did that happen?
And would you go as far to say that IRS in '68/'69 fits that list too? I've never driven a swing axle vehicle, so I can't compare. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

I used eche-bus fix for this.
Home depot nylon bolts and nuts. Works great, no rust, and easily removed when necessary and cheap to boot.
These are all great solutions nonetheless. _________________ 1974 VW Combi 1800 Auto. Weber 32/36 |

That can be alleviated. I will run wires to the marker and hook them up to light switch. Easy. |

Hey GeorgeO, Great idea that I'll need to steal next time I have this problem. Another great place for using what we called "nutserts" at the airline is to hold the splash pan on.
