Sorted alternator rebuild. Fresh everything.
Install did not go so well. Unknowingly flipped pulley around, but Samba folks got me sorted.
Next up was Pertronix distributor and Bosch wires.
Still need to sort a bracket for the oil pressure switch and wire the distributor. Heat exchangers are at sand blast and then I'll be ready for a set of dual Kadrons. Stoked to finally be on the tail end of this build. |

Job change put the kybosh of forward moment for a bit, but I'm back at it now.
Scored some detail parts. Surprisingly difficult to get. Thanks to German Supply for making these happen.
And finally had time to install carbs from Kaddie Shack. Jeff has been really helpful and responds quickly to every dumb question I've emailed him. Good company to deal with.
Using the original power brake crossover tube, so it'll need to go to powder. SVDA distributor needs a vacuum line and everything needs clamps. Kit is pretty thorough although the plastic breather lines are suspect.
Couple of things to tidy up and waiting on clutch kit before it goes back in. Should be soon, though! |

One last missing piece of tin. Saw a couple in the classified, hoping to score one this week.

Good to see this engine coming along. Just thought I would throw in a tip regarding that throttle linkage.
It works, but the design of the linkage makes it difficult to sync the 2 carbs easily. After almost 2 years I broke down and bought a linkage kit from Jeff at KS. LT and RT hand threaded rods make dialing in the carbs a breeze. Plus, your engine is on the stand and that would make setting it up a breeze compared to when it is installed.
Had to do some modifications, but am really happy with it. |

Nice looking engine. You'll need a clamp on the oil filler tube, along with an grommet in the sheetmetal. And you'll need the cork gaskets for the new heat exchanger closers.
PS you should run the #1 and 3 spark wires under the cross rod. _________________ '72 Elm Green Deluxe |

Thanks! Got the clamp, have not found the oil filler grommet or the cork for heat exchanger closers.
Any suggestions?

Scored one of Boat Yard Bus's billet taco plates. Easy install and nice home for temp sensor. Had to shorten dipstick by 1/4" though.

This project is endless, but makes me smile whenever I work on it. Finally time to install motor, had to get creative getting it off the stand
It went in pretty easily after that (dropped the trans a few inches to line things up). Now onto the peripherals.

Five years in, probably built ten bikes since I started the bus project and last summer moved from Cali to chilly Wisconsin. Finally getting back in the groove. Dash wiring was pretty rough, most it needed love. Wrapped ignition switch, all switches and tidied up the mess that PO had left behind the dashboard. Special thanks to Busdaddy for all the help along the way.
If you're working on your dash, buy this tool!

Nice build! I see you used a vanagon motor as your core and ended up going with carbs....do you still have any of the EFI bits and interested with parting with any?
Thanks! _________________ 1978 Sage Green panel, 2.0 FI |

Thanks! Dropped off both motors to the builder and got one good one back, EFI stuff is long gone.

Darn! Thanks anyway! Keep up the good work, nice to see the interest of your young one. My 7 yr old likes my 78 panel bus too. _________________ 1978 Sage Green panel, 2.0 FI |

First time viewer of this build. Gotta say, it is pretty awesome. I just recently started to take apart my dash and now I think I need to go with the all metal dash.
Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks! Samba has been pretty amazing support.
Last part of the bus that leaked got replaced today.
Also started the engine compartment panel install.
and scraped 45 years of goo out of the drivers compartment.

First time it's had a running motor (or possibly any motor) in 35 years. Some tuning to sort, but pretty excited to see it move under its own power.
Healthy oil pressure as well. Paint burning off the header and looks to be running rich.
