Tried an extensive search, and came up with things here and there.

With there being so many different types of flashers, originals, reproductions, etc...is there any reference for what the car would have been equipped with from the factory and year changes.

Specifically, I am looking for a September 4th, 1958 (59 model year) bug.

From what I can tell, this is the correct flasher.

Pages E-10, 3 and E-10, 4 from the Bentley show a similar flasher.

I currently have the WW installed on the car and am trying to be period correct. Finding them in the classifieds has been "interesting", to say the least. A correct part name would be "4 prong flasher", correct?

Does the progressive refinements book have any specific details?

Thanks for any guidance!

The flasher you have pictured is the correct one for your 59. I believe that flasher to have been used from 58-60. I hear ya on trying to be period correct, I ran my original screw terminal flasher like the one you have pictured forever. Finally, after never getting a constant flash out of the flasher, I threw in the towell and bought a WW flasher.
If you are using a WW flasher now, then you more than likely will be disapointed going back to an original. They are very tempermental.
If you are worried about somebody looking behind your wire cover and seeing your WW flasher, then you can always move it to the backside of the bracket, and run a non hooked up original up front. Then at a quick glance all you will see is the original. Wink

That is good thinking! Smile

I thought stale's idea was great.

I guess if you you wanted a more devious mock-up, I suppose you could fab a bracket based on those pictures, and a taller cylinder that would slip over the reproduction relay. You would have to carefully drill and tap the relay terminals to run screws into them. Viola, a period correct-looking relay that would require disassembly to identify if you are attentive to detail.

I agree. Having trouble sourcing an original one to mock up but will continue!

The May 1960 parts list shows a 141953185B number with an asterisk (meaning other part numbers exist for the application)

With VW using a Ghia part number at that time, I thought I'd look at the Ghia parts section of the classifieds. There is one, but I think it might be a bit overpriced.

Ouch. Maybe another year or two in the classifieds will bring that price down to Earth.
Anybody have the dimensions of those old relays?

Oldveedubs, you could try running a post for a junker/non-working unit... Have you already tried that?

I contacted the above ad and the seller says it has "BGC/51" on the part.

Can anyone look on theirs and see what I should be looking for?

Thanks!
