As a teenager I drove delivery for a few Japanese auto wreckers in the very late 70's and early 80's so I spent my whole day on the road checking out the competition from Europe. I recall the brake lights on the newish VW's all flickered a bit before coming on steady, I don't see vintage WC's doing it these days so it got me to wondering what made them do that, why don't they do it now? Was it something that failed often and early so it got changed out? There's no wiring diagrams here on TS so I can't see if they use a 2 stage switch and a prewarning circuit of some sort.

The reason I ask is I'd like to add that to my bus (seems like a great safety feature as it sure caught the eye) and wonder what switch or relay I need.
Thanks.

Can you elaborate?, do WC's use a pedal switch?

german build till 84 has brake light switch in master.... pa built starting in 981 is pedal... and most all 85 is pedal switch...

so a 84 jetta has 2 switches on master.. there is a spot of enough pressure to slowcar but not turn them on... at traffic lights you can see this in bumper of car behind you.. more of lazy foot vs design... but vs non pressure kind can flicker...

Interesting, so they use a pair of 113-945-515G switches just like the later aircooleds? It's odd that they never flicker on a bus, maybe it's got something to do with the master being near the engine on the WC's and the resulting vibration? Hmmm......
