I'm opposite, driving almost 40 years, relative few:
68 VW (bought in 1970, caught fire Oct. 1972)
70 VW bought Nov. 1972 (still have, retired)
71 VW Convertible bought 1976 (driver, with 1835cc)
1979 Toyota truck bought 1986, sold 1994
1988 Mazda B2200 truck bought 1994, dily driver
Of course, spouse(s) and my kids have had vehicles, not VWs. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. Second owner of each. 1988 Mazda B2200 truck, 1998 Frontier, 2014 Yukon, 2004 Frontier King Cab. All manual transmission except for the Yukon. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=335294 http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=335297 |

Not so many for me, but maybe it's too many considering I've only been owning cars for just over 3 years.
Previous cars:
-95 Plymouth Neon
My first car, what a POS. If you can think of a fluid, it leaked it. Had to add a quart of oil every 20 miles or so near the end there........Bought for $1300, a year later sold to scrap yard for $75 .
-91 Toyota Tercel
Received the car as a gift for free, then drove it for 2 years as-is without any repairs or major maintenance getting 40.5 MPG.
Somebody drove into it while it was parked putting a dent in the unibody. Insurance company totalled it out over the dent, gave me $850 for the car, didn't change the title and told me to do whatever I wanted with it, so I kept driving it.
Head gasket died, replaced engine for $300, head gasket died in that engine, then sold it for $300.
-03 Chevrolet Cavalier (girlfriend's)
Put 30k miles on it the first year we had it. The transmission started to have issues shifting (stupid automatics) but other than that It worked good till about 60k miles. Then the ignition system totally went out, had to replace coil, ignition control module and spark plugs. 4 months later the ICM went out again, causing massive misfires which burned up the cat. converter, o2 sensor, and spark plugs. After spending $500 to correc the same issue again we decided to sell it before the ICM went out again. For the most part this car is not missed.
Current vehicles:
-71 VW Super Beetle
currently restoring, doing my best to get her on the road asap
-88 Ford F-250
the work horse around here, runs but the clutch recently went out and I haven't fixed it yet
-99 Ford Escort
Bought for $1600 from a guy that thought it was a loss as it wasn't running right and shops couldn't figure it out, I fixed the vacuum leak and spent $500 to put new suspension all around and new brakes, has been running like a champ ever since.
The best part is probably that I've never put a sinlge car of mine in the shop, always bought the parts and did the work myself, and I don't plan to do it any differently in the future. |

66 Chevy Corvair 4 door hardtop - Knew too little about cars to fix this one up enough to make it a good car...
76 VW Bus - POS, always something wrong with it.
71 VW Super Beetle - Solid car, too stupid to keep it working well; still couldn't kill it.
85 1/2 Ford Escort Pony - POS didn't even get 100K on it before major repairs needed. Yes, it was a 1/2 year release all the docs and some of the parts were specific to that 1/2 year release.
96 Honda Civic DX - Best car I've ever owned. (purchased new)
97 Dodge Stratus - Not a bad car, but not a great. Fair-ta-middlin' (purchased new)
03 Mazda Protege 5 - Second best car I've ever owned. (purchased new)
73 VW Thing - Not running yet, got it in really poor condition.
03 Honda Odyssey - Was in the running for best car until my wife wrecked it.
05 Toyota Sienna - Good car so far, great mileage for as big as that fucker is (21/26). _________________ ..._____
