Mr. Hanky ~ 1986 SyncTintop Build ~ Vanistan #51
Thought I should get the thread going on this. Those who know me, know that I have been slowly restoring a 1986 SyncWesty. Another vehicle sold and that afforded me a relatively rust free 1986 Syncro Tintop(the same original color of the SyncWesty, and my favorite vanagon color). Well, I am not HansJ or Hodokaguy when it comes to the do-it-yourself so, my original three year build from the SyncWesty build in my sigline is going a bit overtime for the love of a nice early syncro tiptop build. I will add some more pics in the coming days.
Having already ordered my Vanistan motor and anticipating my 11-15 delivery(could have been 3 months earlier but I emailed Chris from work and was gone for 2 weeks ), I have been in a bit of a conundrum. The decision has been made that Mr. Hanky will be the recipient of Vanistan #51 and the SyncWesty will be on the back burner. I just gotta do it.
Driveline had a wobble. Could not be rebuilt as was early style. New slip joint driveline from Driveline Specialties of Portland, $475. Praying this fixes the high speed vibration and that it is not the VC…..
add some spare parts for the motor swap($230)
new reconditioned fuel injectors($50.00 for all 4)adding brand new gaskets though just to be safe
all for the love of this, VANISTAN #51
So the SyncWesty is running and driving great right now and my goal is to get Mr. Hanky in shape to be my daily driver and this years trail basher, then finish the Westy slowly over the next year.
Just adding a few more of the van as I found it:

I think the words you're looking for are slowly destroying!
Congrats! A Vanistan in a tintop is going to rock. I can't wait to see it in person! _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS

Ooh ooh, this Cascadian would like to do a stinky in your thread Mr Kotter.
I'm currently servicing an '86 Syncro that looks a lot like that one. Same interior and exterior color scheme. Look for the love in another thread shortly.
Start posting yer stuff, or I will swamp you, sonny

Many ideas spinning in my brain. Tintop with 14's fits in the garage(thinking this already has upgraded springs but really not sure) with @ 1 1/2' clearance. Thinking I would like at least 15"s but can handle some 16"s. I want Fox shocks or, something fancy and new and I do not want to lose the garagability function which has been my nemesis on the Westy. J Charlton hightop has been up to the table a couple times already, but, again, the garage issue. I think I may get a set of flogging wheels and tires on bigger rims, a roof rack, an ARB awning or two, and some accessories, in no particular order, and see if this tintop thing works for me. There are a lot of advantages to a tintop, also, lots of disadvantages which I am all too quick to point out after having owned a FEW of these things. I just have been thinking that my syncrolust may not need involve a Syncro Westfalia…. I want one built up and ready to go with no questions. The Westy will be my trusty steed through early December though, then, I will decide if I need to post to that OTHER THREAD _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

Don't let it become an excuse for not making it to Syncro Solstice. It should be rockin by then. I'm looking forward to feeling that Vanistan power. It should be great in a tintop and be loads of fun. |

No 22s
No big bumpers
No exoskeleton
No monsterliner
No triple spare tire carriers
No LEDs
No upgraded grill
No lighting upgrades/spot lights/fog lights/rear lights/10,000,000,000 watt light pointing into the sky
You do have a sweet antenna ball so I am looking forward to seeing the rest unfold.

Grease up Mr Hanky really well and give him that new black shaft in his under carriage
If he still vibrates, well, I don't blame him |

Since this is a Syncro w/WBX thread, does anyone have a pic of the skid plate where it attaches to the mustache bar with a stocker? I just expended much google screen time and could only find pics with oddball engines. _________________ Casey--

I will do my best to share any stock pictures you need.
The holiday has me traveling with just my phone.
If it is not posted before I return I will post it for you. |
