Thanks Supercub,
Great story. The Kansas farm house in now my screen saver. A trip you will never forget. You did some extensive route searching. |

Thanks. I love that house as well. It is just off the K-4 highway west of Lindsborg. I lived in that area of Kansas for five years and passed that house many times. I have scouted out and explored a lot of old structures but that house is by far the most beautiful. I always liked the symmetry and lack of junk around it, as well as the weathered dead tree in front of it. As far as the route planning, I am kind of addicted to Google Maps and love looking for back routes to cross the country as it turns trips into adventures. |

I enjoyed reading your trip report
I'm in Lewisville, and although I no longer own a VW, I would still be interested in tagging along on some of your local day trips through north Texas... |

I actually moved to New Hampshire about 4 months ago. I grew up in Highland Village right next to Lewisville. |

Thanks for posting such a well written story of your trip. I enjoyed it and especially your photography. What kind of camera did you use out of curiosity? _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

The camera is a roughly 8 year old Sony digital SLR. Nothing fancy but it's durable and reliable. |

I just did a paper about how traveling art shows in the late 1700's inspired adventure in many east coast Americans. You have done the same. I want to fire up my Bus and disappear on some back roads for a long while.
Great post, and AWESOME photos! |

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your story! The photographs are National Geographic quality in my opinion, please post more if you have some! I could almost hear the screech of hawks when looking at those wide open areas in Utah!
I have 9 more years until I can retire and now I know what I want to do when that day arrives!
Thank you for sharing and inspiring. _________________ Looking for anything from Hal Casey Motors out of Hamburg New York, from license plate surrounds to matchbooks.

It's good to hear that you all enjoyed my story. I would definitely advise anyone to make the time for a cross country trip with whatever wheels you have. By avoiding the Interstates you can discover the real American countryside. That trip was definitely one of the best times of my life though I am just 29.
pandoras box, thank you for the high compliments of my photographs. I have enjoyed taking pictures since I was a kid. There were over 500 pictures from the trip so I am sure that I can round up a few more to post.
I am already planning an even bigger trip for 2015, though this time I will most likely be on my trusty '82 Honda C70 scooter. Just need to save up some money for the road and unload some excess stuff which unfortunately may include my Beetle. |

Still enjoying the photos. I have screen savers for a long time. Absolutley amazed at the back roads you took. A regular modern day Lewis & Clark in a VW. This thread is a big encouragement to get more of us on the road. |

Some amazing photos. I've always dreamed of taking a road trip along the back roads of America. Once I have my bug running, reliable and I'm ready you've inspired to me to take one.
I already want to plan a back-road trip up north to see some distant family. I'll have to get my brother to tag along so we can both enjoy the sites. |

I too enjoyed reading the details of your trip. I drove part of that route, from Pueblo headed east (Ohio) about five years ago. It was a great experience and served as a great escape from everyday life for a few days. A buddy of mine wants to do a cross country trip later this summer to experience the classic weekend in Los Angeles. We haven't worked out the details yet, but it's a good possibility. I agree 100% that the back roads are much more enjoyable. It's best if you have no real schedule and can stop and look at local sights and interesting things along the way. Thanks again. |

I don't often reply to post, but wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your trip report and photos, and it has inspired me to keep plugging away on my 40 hp '65

I am glad you liked it. After seeing your reply, I looked back through this post and now I am longing for another cross-country journey with the VW. The car actually is for sale on here now, but I might have to rethink that. Good luck with finishing your '65. |
