Need to get the police to see if these guys will admit to any of the other Vanagon heists. If so and they get consecutive sentences, they may at least spend a few months in the slammer. |

SPUTNIK WAS FOUND! Some time early this morning. Two jerks were arrested during the find. It was located on NE 85th somewhere south of Lake City. Still waiting for full report. Original plates were STILL INTACT (these guys are not too bright).

Maxine - awesome news!! I have no doubt these dipfucks are the same ones that stole my van as well (plates were still on mine too). I'm really glad you got an early xmas present - keep us posted! |

That's some pretty big talk, Dave. The idea is to become as whole as possible without incurring a life sentence and a neck tattoo yourself.
In the US, this is done through the courts.
What might be more helpful would be for those familiar with this territory to give us some informal opinions of whether civil legal action is possible here.
Depending how violated you feel, you could seek to recover the value of your time lost, the lost use of your vehicle, the risk you incurred of never getting your vehicle back, the diminished value of the vehicle (carfax may have it permanently listed as "stolen" now) and anything else you can think of.
I'm no lawyer, but I have to believe that all these things have a value.
Of course there's risk too. Even if successful, you might end up with an uncollectable judgement and some pissed off felons....
Are there any legal professionals on the list who could give us some guidance on this? |

Very happy for this outcome! Hope the van is in good shape!
Also hope these are the rats behind the whole string.
When time permits, all details on the recovered van and the situation may help others prevent theft and maybe even lead to more evidence. An officer told me that unfortunately the DA's office is swamped and often allows a plea to be made, perhaps the recent news exposure and some activism will nudge the case to proceed? Total speculation on my part, I am no lawyer.
Most important your van is recovered! _________________ 1986+ Wolfsburg Weekender Pop-Top 2.3 WBX Manual Trans |

Perhaps the "court of public opinion" and the internet could play a part in all of this.
If photos of the arrested guys were publicized, with their names, on social media forums perhaps others would think a little about the potential long term consequences of their actions.
As long as only factual data was included - eg. don't say "stole the van" because they're probably going to claim that it miraculously appeared running in front of them 2 blocks away from where they were stopped - rather say "occupants of a stolen van" and "arrested" - as long as all statements only reflect the actual, observed happenings there is no libel involved.
Many of us are pretty open when someone approaches us in a parking lot or wherever and comments on our van, sometimes showing the interior, talking about it etc etc - last year, a young family man was murdered in Southern Ontario by 2 guys who he took for a test drive in a truck he was trying to sell - it would be nice to have a ready source of information, available with a few mouse clicks, about people who, through their own actions deserve to be exposed for those actions. _________________ NAHT hightop availability May 18 2023 -

I agree with John's statement. There must be some way to use these incidents as a tool unto themselves. Social publications of "alleged law breakers"names and where with all should be/could be said tool.
I'm not real keen on taking anyone for a test drive but think I will carry my pepper spray and will only take one person at a time. It can be a scary world out there.
If you people in the PNW come up with a plan(s) could you share them with all of us so we can be better prepared, please. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

the perps will be in jail for 3 days awaiting arraignment, then released, have a warrant for not paying the fine, and will do the same thing next month. The system doesn't work. Recidivism for these crimes are through the roof.
The jimmy hoffa method is the only way to send the message they will hear. _________________ '89 Westy - EJ25/22 Frank 4.44 5mt

Great news hopefully it hasn't been vandalized much.
Please if possible post pictures and/or names of the arrested if you get them. _________________ If happiness is being a mechanic, owning a Vanagon is nirvana.

This is the USA: Land of Lawsuits, where you can sue anyone for anything. A civil suit in this case could be brought against these two losers, but I wonder what good it would do: If these are meth-heads who are stealing vans and other personal property, that means they probably don't have a dime to their names, which means being made whole financially, even after judgment is made, will prove difficult.
These two scumbags need to be made an example of: Aside from  , jail time and, if drug addicts, rehab. _________________ ~Kamz

The court records are public information.
Get their names and their residences of record - then let us know when they are released . . . _________________ '90 White Westy ("The Longship")

I have started to search. I know Maxine is really busy, but, when we get the names, hopefully we will get a PM campaign of the locals and get their mugshots posted as well as other pertinent details. Really does sound like what Dan, E34M20, said, the same slimy thieves that took his Syncro, as they did not even bother to take off the plates. This has been a pretty sweet year for the crooks…..its time they are stopped.
Please local folks, keep looking for info on this and follow up with emails to KOMO. I think that is our best bet for MAX exposure(get it?)

WOOOT!
Anyone in the legal persuasion up in WA that may have access to the national criminal registry( in Oregon it was OJIN or IJIP, IIRC), please do some digging and help us out. You would also be helping out the news as most of the story they did was just recycled information from this thread _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

no love from Mugshots.com, what county was the arrest in, that will help narrow down the search: King, Pierce…….?
Thanks in advance.
Anyone up there have any law enforcement contacts? Mine are all in Oregon. _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

Lake city isn't that big.
It's where I bought my current DO about 10 years ago.
If they're stolen in that area and found in that area, was there any canvassing of the neighborhood looking for these vans? _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Cartzest,
Lake City is inside the limits of the City of Seattle, which is in King County. They probably were booked downtown with the Seattle PD.
I don't live in the north end where this all seems to be happening, but still this thread inspired me to speed up my security improvements. Eventually I'll get around to battery cut-offs but for now I own a bright yellow twin-hook Club that cost $22 on Amazon. I'ts big and dorky but it says "move along" quite nicely to passerbys and I just throw it in my garage when I leave. _________________ She's built like a steakhouse, but she handles like a bistro! |
