Worked on it again after a long break.
Only little things at the moment... like repairing the bottom windshield frame 
I quickly brushed a primer on the repair so I can have a better view of the junction between frame and front clip and check that it is nice and straight 
I also grafted the original semaphore hole from the bus onto the NOS B pillar :
More to come during the next weeks

Hi there,
I've been working hard on the bus recently so a thread update is worth it.
I lost my motivation a few years back because I was not happy with a few things that I had to redo but the BenPon deadline is quite soon and help me to find the motivation to finish the bus. There is no way I do not make it with the 51 this time. 
I thought it was way too dark inside that bus so I decided to add a rear window.
Nope, i'm kidding of course. 
Actually I found a NOS top side panel and thought after a few mods it would be much better to have this period genuine VW parts than the new sheet metal I welded in 4 years ago. It may seems useless yes, but I like the idea there is not too much 2018 metal on the bus
I did a few last rust repairs :
I modified the A pillar seal channel to be 50/51 correct....

This is the way the seal sit on very early buses :
I also removed the flat areas on the cargo floor, next to the bulkhead, which were not there yet on a 51 bus. It would have been easier to do it before to weld the floors, but I forgot 
I then built a rotisserie to work on the underside with some confort. This tool is great. I can flip the bus alone from one side to the other in a few seconds. 
It allowed me to modify the jackpoints to be 50/51 correct and easily weld them in the correct spot which is specific to 50/51 busses.
I spent around 3 weeks detailing the chassis, grinding a few last welds, welding horn brackets, jackpoints, etc.... and finally it was time to apply a final coat of primer and some straight and clean seal betweens panels.
Here the chassis is almost ready for the paint job :
And here it is...
I painted it RAL7039 QuartzGrau and did blue areas and oversprays inside the wheel wells.
To see the chassis like this is very rewarding!
I enjoyed the bus was still on the rotisserie to install a few things on the underside. Brake fluid lines, cables... etc
Both gearbox holder tubes were bent so I replaced them by correct 45mm thick tube. It's an unusual dimension and almost impossible to find in 4mm thickness (original is 3.25mm but yet harder to find so i went for something stronger) At least here in France. I had to buy 6 meters so I have some spare section if someone need to do some repairs too  ....
Then I've been able to paint this area in the same time as some parts of the engine bay. It results in something half OG paint / half resprayed but it looks nice IMHO. Since the picture below I did some blending job and it's almost impossible to see the difference between OG and new. 
The center of the rear corners let appear some primer. The OG corners was done like this when I got the bus. Before to paint this I also built the little lip on the bottom of the corner / side panel junction, like original on Wolfsburg buses. I welded some little tabs on the battery tray for the split beetle type battery cover hold downs and springs.
I then painted most of the cab area...
And did some blending job too. For example, this part is repainted.

On the left side of the NOS panel - What was the little slot? |
Looks like an nos panel for the upper quarter behind the cargo door on the left hand side. Looks like he modified it. |

Exactly. For a RHD bus initially.
The holes is for the hinge and you can also see on the other side that I removed the 3 louvers |

You will see me there but as for the bus I really need to hurry up.
I seriously burnt my right hand 2 and a half weeks ago while working on the gas tank and I can only begin to use it again now.
Schedule was tight already, and these 2 weeks without working really sucks ! 
Well, I will work as much as I can to be able to drive it there... 
but probably not 100% finished 
Only 28 days before departure !!
