Rustproofing, it provides access to the rear frame rail. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Yep, I was just about to say that. I actually did do a cursory search attempt, but got a bunch of crazy results. _________________ 1970 Westfalia Campmobile - SF Bay Area

That's where you put the rod in to crank down the engine. |
Lol! The other side is for optional electric start, you can use a drill and a rare 1/4" square drive shaft to engage a one-year only starter clutch for improved cold-weather starts. Most PO's removed the setup as they didn't understand how to use it, and their mechanics had a much easier and better setup to replace it. _________________ Robert in Memphis

I dropped of my bus today to the engine builder for new carbs and electronic ingintion.
While I was ther I asked him about the holes. He is like 65 and had been a VW mechanic for 40+ years. He was stumped on the reason of the holes on a T2A but was sure the ones on a T2B were for drainage. _________________ __________

If those are not for the pass- thru wire for those rare rear facing European fog lamps I would say they are for drainage. |

The double cabs have A set up higher around the level of the rear engine hatch.I have wondered if they were for A jig that lined up the rear when they were assembling the body in the factory. |

^^ This. There is another hole behind it, which allows you to spray rust proofing inside that rail.

This must have been the way they assembled the panels at the factory before welded them.
I have just repaired both sides on my bus and these holes provide no access to the frame rail for rust proofing just access to the rear bumper nuts that are welded to the frame , there is no access forward due to a curved bulkhead just behind the first bolt hole on the frame rail.

you know now that I read you bringing this up I found this in the technical section. Vw bus cavity protection 1972 under the service bulletins.Though it does show the front wheel wells as access holes, in the back it clearly shows them going under the bus to get to the rear of the frame.Heres A link to the rear frame.Although its in German and of poor quality you can see clearly that they are under the back of the bus in order to do rust protection into the frame http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/3_72_bus_cavity_preservation/17.jpg |
