That is a nice muffler... Does it have the heat riser pipes? |
This is what I understand to be the heat riser.
Instead of the bulbous housing around the pipes the VS system comes with heat wrap. (I added a second layer of exhaust heat wrap.)
The VS system is big and fills the area between the engine and the rear apron with only millimetres to spare. (Photos and sound video to follow, as I say, when the nurse is out of the house.)
I think Nicholas may have posted something on this system and the problems fitting it. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I was referring to the two small connections that connects to the intake manifold assembly. I think yours is for the preheater.
Question... Where did you buy your firewall insulation material? And are you happy with the results? _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. Rest in peace Ruby, I will miss you. Hello <insert Ghia name here>! |

I have twin Webers on my 1641 engine and those two connections to the manifold assembly had to be sealed off. I put a steel sheet between the two.
I used Wurth sound deadening all round, including on both sides of the firewall between the engine compartment and the rear luggage area. I didn't use use very expensive shiny sound deadener you get in the US.
The Wurth sound deadener comes in two thicknesses. I used the thinner one in the doors and the thick black one elsewhere. I'm assuming you're referring to the firewall you can see in black behind the engine in this photo:
I'm happy with the outcome and as it happens will be going to get some more tomorrow to cover the interior rear wheel arches.
EDIT: Here's a photo of my wife using her foot to tamp the black Wurth sound deadener down on the floorpan.

The sun came out in Auckland today for my birthday and a nice long drive in my Ghia. About 5 years after I found her.

Having an issue with my 1/4 window. Was hoping for some insight. After installing everything, new rubber with original hardware, the windows are FAR from closing. The thin rubber that goes under the channel was to small for the original channel... and the widow gasket was too small for the channel. Finally able to get it all together (5hrs), the gasket seems to bulky for the window close. Did you have issues similar to this? Which rubber did you purchase if you recall? Was looking at your post in the page below, seems as though you have working 1/4 windows.

Yes, I had serious problems. I eventually installed new channels but kept the original KGP&R rubber. I think that rubber is the problem: too hard. I have not looked for softer rubber because it's too difficult to check the quality and precise specs from down here where I am at the bottom end of the world. At least where you are you have access to a greater range of suppliers. I think you should go to a German supplier for the rubber, as I did for the front hood rubber - with a very satisfactory result. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, trying to find a different supplier... Problem is, I didn't buy this stuff, and have no idea where it was purchased. There was a WCM catalog in the box, so that is my guess. Gonna try KGPR. _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. Rest in peace Ruby, I will miss you. Mine was KGP&R. There's a link to another supplier on your build thread. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Yes. You bought new channel and kept the rubber you purchased from KGP&R. Ok, will try to find rubber somewhere else... I wonder if the WCM rubber will be better... Not sure where to buy, afraid I'll just get the same material. _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. Rest in peace Ruby, I will miss you. Sorry for the hijack, but I've usually found wcm to have pretty good rubber overall, don't know if it's dimensional or material. From my bug days I bought windshield rubber from one of the big suppliers and it simply wouldn't fit, bought wcm and slipped right in, seemed more supple, although it had other problems, but may have been do to the car still having the "teeth" installed. _________________ 1972 Karmann Ghia |

No problem. I see this as a relevant exchange of knowledge and information. Your post certainly helped me to decide where to look for my next purchase of Ghia rubber. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Forgot to mention absolutely beautiful work on the resto., beautiful car.
WRT rubber, it may be a that different suppliers have there different individual rubber that just works better than others, hopefully we can share our experience with each piece/supplier, so we all know what hodgepodge of rubber works best, i.e. Buy this this rubber from so an so, and buy this piece of rubber from so and so _________________ 1972 Karmann Ghia |

With one set of grandchildren in Australia and the other in Hawaii, we finally had a week to ourselves and we took a road trip to Rotorua - the holiday capital of the North Island of New Zealand.
The odometer reading on the new speedo was at 105 kilometres when we left:
We stopped at the Rotorua Museum and took in some colour in the surrounding gardens:
We went for a run (a slog at times on rubbery legs!) in the Redwoods Forest. A place for dogs to walk, horseriding, walking, running, cycling, and pushing babies in prams. And for our Ghia to pose against the backdrop of the forest and its beautiful textures and colours:
These ferns, for which New Zealand is famous, are huge: (or my Ghia is really small)
The road home:
Home at 705 kilometres:

I introduced my big loves to each other this morning. First time on a tennis court in almost 20 years. My backhand is still my most reliable shot.

It's been a while - I had a deadline for a book due on 30 November, but I'm out of the wars and the summer is here with a vengeance.
I had to do an alternator conversion because my Ghia's 50 year old generator was kaput.
Can't wait for Calexico to perform here. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly
