That is not a easy recommendation.
A lot of variables there. Driving style, comfort required, money, shock mounts, money, weight of suspension/tire, weight of buggy, money, type of suspension, suspension travel distance for shock, money, ability to adjust shock for circumstance. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

So I final add Thing front arms and Spindels to,the front. And put new torsions and adjustable spring plates on the rear. Rode much better. Here are some fun pics _________________ dbsmith

So after seeing a buggy that had rolled over in Big Bear, I think the wife and I would be much safer with harness seat belts.. so that is this weekends project.
We are going to Lake Topaz in Aug, so a few minor items to take care of.

Hi dbsmith, I realize that your thread is mainly geared toward the build of your Manxter, but since you mentioned it, are any additional details/photos available as it relates to this rollover at Big Bear (links from other websites, for example)? I believe it is important for all of us to be aware of unfortunate situations like this, so that we can learn from both the cause and the result (safety restraints/protection, possible injuries/hopefully none, etc).
Thanks in advance. _________________ Gary David Holbrook

So i’m still stuck on front shocks. Since I put the Thing Spindels on and the adjusters are set fairly low, the stock shocks don’t have any travel. I can use an Empi lowered shock or a custom shock. Travel I would like 17”-11”. With stock mounting brackets. Ball joint. Street and mild off road.
Any suggestions. ? _________________ dbsmith

17-11inch of wheel travel with ball joint front end, not something you can really do.
Switching to a king and link pin front end is really the answer to getting more travel.
http://www.sacoperformance.com/ sells a mounting block kit to install a king pin front end on a ball joint pan head.
Even with a stock king pin front end and stock height shock tower if you remove the stock stop between trailing arms and move it to the top you can get over 8in of wheel travel. _________________ Joseph

Is he maybe saying 17" to 11" of shock length? 17" extended and 11" compressed? That would be typical 6" travel for a stock ball joint beam.
I don't get installing Thing spindles and setting the beam low. That seems counter-productive.
Since the ball joints are the travel limits, shock length doesn't change when you raise or lower a ball joint beam. Those shocks for lowered beams or raised beams are smoke and mirrors. And BS.
If you have stock shock towers and stock arms in a ball joint front end, stock length shocks will serve. If the torsions are set low, you are using up travel and won't get 6" of compression out of it anyway. You'll still have 6" total travel available, but the majority of it will be droop.
Shorter shocks will get you more shock travel from ride height to shock bottom out, but with still the same ball joint travel, much of the shock travel will be wasted. The ball joints will then bottom out before the shocks. _________________ Richard

With stock 181 German ball joints, trailing arms and spindles, I get 8 1/2 inches travel at the spindle.
There is a fellow in Decatur IL who modifies Ball Joint trailing arms to be wider and longer, thus creating more travel at the spindle just like link and king pin arms are done.
I too lower my 181 suspension when not off roading, (beam adjusters) until the trailing arms are parallel with the ground. Makes for a really good ride quality.
