Mark,
the inner part of the decklid is the same primer (seems lighter in the pic)? And what about the engine compartment?

To answer the earlier question about the primer, as far as I can tell, the primer is just as glossy and durable as the final paint layer on these VW's. Not the same as primers which are used these days.

The buses I've stripped have in this order: steel, thin black layer which I guess is a first surface dip treatment, first primer paint coat, second primer paint coat, body color, then upper body color for two tone buses.

The delivered in primer buses would have the first three layers.

been busy cleaning up the rear end on this one--- should look beautiful when it's all together, taillights, one reflector, big license light...all original, never cut. Amazing to find one this age with it's original taillight holes--!

unfortunately, this one had a damaged corner that someone stripped bare, beat in with a hammer, and slathered some kind of filler over. They never even sanded-- it looked like a cupcake. So I stripped it back down to metal, hammered it straight, and sprayed, it. Also filled in those ugly trailer hitch slots and second reflector holes--

I know this thread is mainly about paint stripping, but I figured I'd post an update on what has been going on with the bus---more than paint stripping.
The driver's side short wall (left hand cargo doors, remember..) was crumpled pretty hard at the lower cargo door hinge. I first tried to bang it out to see if I could get it to a somewhat decent position, but it was way too far gone. The B-Pillar was cranked inward about 5cm, and the rocker panel area of the short wall was patched with 16 gauge plate and an arc welder- so i figured it was best to just trim off the damaged area, get everything straightened out (nice to have nos doors laying around for fitting!!), weld a new section in and spray it to match.

So I fabricated a piece for the side...thought about cutting out the original door hinge area, fixing it, and using that...but in the end, it was easier to figure out how to make the flanged holes. And i think it is nicer--

so- that piece is fitted up nicely-- but not time to weld it in yet-----first I need to deal with the inner rocker, so i can line up the two rockers... which means dealing with the edge of the cargo floor--which means- yeah, you see where this is going. The rust chase never ends....

I did find a little treat hiding down inside the rocker though!

Don't worry about deviating from paint stripping - it is all fascianting to see - thanks for sharing. Is the semaphore still there that that lable fell off?

There were semaphores on the bus, albeit not original or correct. They overhung the semaphore slot by a few centermeters--

I think this originally should have had Ribbed SHO's...

I'd agree with you on the ribbed semaphores, I don't know enought o know if they would have been SHO or another make.

again your craftsmanship is only appropriate for the bus. wonderful! this will be a soulful blend between total original and smooth repairwork. I wish that more classic cars and especially Bd's would get that treatment !

I done some research and here some new info about the G logo;

I think "G" is for "Gustavsson" The old owners of AB Omnibus, Örebro

That Bus is in the garage of the world famous Mark Lapriore. Its in the exact same condition as it was last March! Mark has the green light to get it done maybe he can post some pictures when he gets a chance. I do not know what my final plans are for the Bus. The interior and headliner are in great condition its a very solid and original 51 complete, minus the engine. It very well may reside in our Vw Delivery Center next to the Sudfink 50 and 52 Single Cab or I may offer it up. Thanks for the info on the G
