Barn Find VW THING, Type 181, 27,000 miles. Full restoration planned. That's the barn in the background. Factory tires. Last driven in 1978. |

Looks like a nice score, but wonder if it might not be 127000 miles. _________________ "Lili Marlene"

You are too clever...seems to be a continuity issue here!
The proper vehicle for flat towing a THING. Only 65 miles to go on the original tube tires.
Note the WWII, 2nd Panzer Div insignia, or possible gang sign on left rear.
27,000 was correct. It has the 1978 plates and registration/window sticker all attached. Front beam was new, still has parts tag attached. New IRS ZF limited slip in box inside. Factory roll bar is mint. |

That poor Thing has spent a rough life for only 27,000 miles. Good luck on your project. _________________ Jerry...

Day 2. THING is in it's new home, safe and sound. No blowouts on the way home (original 40 yr old tube tires). Inspection & reflection. What's the overall condition in good light, and was this a mistake to take on in the first place? |

What's that smell? Mice were living inside the tunnel! Floor pan is dirty, but in red/orange primer. Looking for signs of the '70's in the ash tray and doors. |

Looks like a great winter project. We'll be expecting great things (pun?) when the snow melts next spring. _________________ Don't be fooled by appearances. In Hawaii, some of the most powerful people look like bums and stuntmen.

Nice score. Your tires shop is going to love you when you replace those tires, we spend like 2 hours at the tire shop fighting the original tubes out of my 74 wheels _________________ Matt Johnson

Chassis has been removed and dropped off at the stripper. This is a chemical strip, and then it's off to the powder coat guy. The down time provided us an opportunity to test this fork lift drive engine conversion from Kennedy Eng. |

Chassis is at Redi-Strip, in Roselle Illinois. Redi-Strip was a nation wide chain, "back in the day". I'm sure they are on the EPA's most wanted list. Was going to go with original statin black chassis type paint, but the powder coater thinks that the clean metal inside the tunnel, once charged, will pull the paint in. There are good size access holes both front and rear, so we'll see if paint gets in there or not. Powder coat because the new owner thinks he wants to drive the car year round! I guess he's thinking glass side curtains and the gas heater. |

Brain and brain, what is brain?
I was actually happy way-back-when when Star Trek was given a time shift to 10 PM, although it ended up being not so good for the show. When I saw this episode opening the then-new season, the first thing I thought was they were going to ruin the show as they had with The Man from UNCLE. The latter tried to be "serious" again but it closed up shop as I must have been the last viewer watching.
I'm glad you can see the spaghetti of wires and see humor in it. It really is the perfect attitude. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

CLICK on PICTURE for more size. More original wiring pics before that special moment when, "it's only original once" is over. It's going to take more than "the teacher" to put this Humpty Dumpty back together again. This is down under the dash on the drivers side. |
