Well after reading and searching high and low, I feel the old Polo rack and pinion units are the way to go for a Type 1 pan under a fiberglass buggy.
Now where does one find one.
Manufacturer VOLKSWAGEN
Number 867 419 065
Description Steering Gear
Cross numbers VOLKSWAGEN 867419065
TRW / KETNER JRM155
LIZARTE 02965700
AUDI 861419063B
AUDI 867419065
AUDI 871019065
GENERAL RICAMBI AU4001
DELCO REMY DSR366L
TRW / KETNER JRM155
FRIESEN QSR147
I have found a couple for sale on Germany EBAY and Germany Amazon but am having issues with language and shipping willingness.
My question has any one found a source in the US that sells these units. I have found a dozen cross numbers but searches never yields a US retailer.
Or a cross number that does work at a US parts house. _________________ -

Alex - Does your rack and pinion mount work for a stock pan based stock width beam, Type I (beetle) ball joint front end that has avis adjustors welded in the center of the top and bottom beam? I always wanted to fit a rack and pinion to my street driven 1968 Beetle. If so, do you have a price for your bracket? Thanks!
Also - what modeling software do you use? - Just curious. |

Yes, it fits to only balljoint beam cars with stock width frontaxle.
Tierods are equal length and i have used german uniball joints as innerjoints.
Usually modified Polo 6N steering joint or 1303 joint works well, you have to shorten the stock steering shaft.
I use daily Solidworks. _________________ Lasercut parts and CAD design |

Alex
like your bracket. and if I can find a steering gear I will look for more details (dimensions etc.)
But As I have seen the units on EBAY.EU absolutely none of the sellers will ship to the USA. _________________ -

Polo rack is from 86 / 86c body model Polo, basically all years up to 1992, including G40.
I can get the correct new rack from germany, the rack bracket itself is tigwelded from lasercut parts by my friend and it has rivetnuts.
I can also provide these other lasercut parts:

PM me if you want to know more. I did not link any pictures to here about parts, since thesamba rules doesnt allow. _________________ Lasercut parts and CAD design |

Can it be modified to fit a king/linkpin 5cm narrowed beam? |

Here is link pin car, stock width axle, rack has been moved 50mm to right, so it doesnt hit to shock tower - this uses VW Polo 6N doublejointed shaft:
This is from latemodel beetle, with -96 mexican body and stock width beam, it uses stock rubber coupler:

There should not needed any mofications to the tank or its position, at least on most cars, and it doesnt need a steering shock, only supercharged polo g40 has steering shock.
Allthough its easy to rise tank littlebit.
This same -59 has steering shock takes more room, but it fits with tank:

Why not use a steering servo like the off road racers use? Take up a lot less room for sure. _________________ '67 Sunroof

Cool thread, but why is it in Engines/Transmissions? Maybe it could be moved or copied where it could be found more easily. |
