I am keen to replace the header/quiet pack but am a bit confused by the timeline in this thread. Just to clarify....Is the VS muffler to heater box conundrum now solved with these?:
http://shop.vintagespeed.com.tw/s.nl/it.A/id.582/.f
Thanks!

You can currently use the lower heat exchangers with the VS exhaust that's been on the market for a few years now.
The discussion I've been involved in revolves around the smaller 'upper' heat exchangers (aka: preheat box) - which are not yet available from Vintage Speed. This means that you will have to run flexible tubing from the fan shroud to the lower heat exchangers.
The proposed Vintage Speed manufactured upper heat exchangers would fit at #2 and #4 as the stock upper heat exchangers do with a stock exhaust and eliminate the need for flexible hose between the fan shroud and the lower heat exchangers.

Yeah... as soon as I figure out the difference between the upper and lower heat exchangers
I am new to Type 3 ownership. All I have ever owned is Type 2s _________________

Take $500 & this picture of the Vintage Speed exhaust to your local Muffler Shop. They'd have it fabricated & installed in a couple days. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

I finally had a look at what is on my Squareback and have read this and other threads more closely. It is much clearer now. The upper heat exchangers are long gone, so until I found some pics I was a bit mystified as to why there would be any. They basically act like the kidneys in the stock mufflers in Type 1s and 2s, correct? I can see why the upper heat exchangers are desirable, as it is probably akin to why my stock muffler set up works better at giving me heat in my 70 SC than the crappy quiet packs I have had to deal with in the past.

You'd have to see where I live to know this is not an option(i.e. I live in a backwater ). _________________

Yes, but it's more complex than that, as the t-3 "pre-heaters" have aluminum heat sink material around the upper pipes (hence the term "pre-heaters"). They actually pre-heat the air before it goes into the main heat exchangers, adding more heat to the cabin. This is 1 reason why you don't want anything rubber or plastic sitting near the outlets in the rear kick panels. Tennis shoes have been known to melt there. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I'd be up for one of the stock replacement versions that would allow the upper heat exchangers to be retained.
Thanks

Update: I don't believe the upper rear heat exchangers are going to happen.
The information I got was: "They're too expensive to make"
No additional information was provided. |

Well, that sucks. I'm not surprised they say that though.
They make a good product, but fall short on the details to make a great product. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I asked what the definition of 'expensive' was but got no reply. Seems their focus is more on T1/T2 and Porsche parts. |

That sounds about right...go where the money is. The only reason they made 1 for the type 3 was because they could basically use most of the existing parts/tooling and sell another product. That just like all the other headers and mufflers on the market. Add some tubing and bends, and you have a type 3 header that uses an off the shelf quiet pack muffler. Add a little less tubing, and you have a type 3 dual muffler set up for more money because it fits a type 3.
I guess you're just going to have to figure out how to add the pre-heaters to the upper pipes on your own if you want them. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

It's not really possible due to the location of the connections. |

Oh come on, you're a resourceful kind of guy. I'm sure you could make it work. Although you'll have to alter/change the tin for it. Just think outside the box a little. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I no longer want it that bad...I'm already having to alter the VS exhaust so that it'll stop blackening my bumper guard. |

Good Morning, Folks,
I've been following this thread for a while now and have been impressed with the thought you all have given to this problem. I have a few questions to add to the discussion:
- What does the VS unit look like inside as far as damping and pipe length? Is there a cutaway picture?
- Has there (ever) been a side-by-side comparison done between all of the readily available T3 systems? I've read here that the sound is good on the VS systems; how to they compare to others as far as power?
At some point not too far down the road, my '69 SB will need a replacement, so the time to start looking is now. Thanks.

Just as an FYI: Beyond this post I won't have any more updates about the progress (or lack thereof) regarding the creation of a VS exhaust that'll work with the upper rear heat exchangers. It's highly unlikely that it'll happen at this point. If it does, it'll have to happen with someone else's help as I've sold all of my Vintage Speed exhausts and parts. |

No but I will be tackling the upper HE problem when I put this "Abarth Repop" on my car. _________________
