Trailer hitch

I would like to tow my 400 lb mahogany runabout with my newly restored '66 Westy, but I'm trying to figure out a hitch arrangement. I have a headered Empi single muffler that appears would be in the way of any kind of hitch. Does anyone know of a way to make a hitch work? Is there one that attaches to where the bumper attaches that would work with the Empi? Since the boat is so light, would a hitch attached to the bumper work?

I cant speak to that type of trailer, but I had a trailer hitch fabricated last summer for my single-wheel, and it was bolted to the bumper mounting bolt area.

I run a thunderbird QP with header, and the fabricator had to slide the mount above the muffler.

this is a hitch Kelly made for his bus and has done lots of miles on it towing his puck trailer around
the bumper brackets are reinforced and I think he put a plate were it bolts onto also for stength
the receiver is cut into the bumper since his bus was super low at the time but you could move that part to below the bumper

Thanks for all the replies. I'm not sure that the hitch referenced in the classifieds will work, since my muffler is tight up against the bottom of the bumper. I'll do some more research on that item.

Since I have not yet figured out how to post pics on this site, you can see pictures of my boat and the restoration at www.sandeace.com. It's my other passion in addition to VW buses and 356 Porsches.

Well guys,

I just got this in the mail yesterday and I am F...ing impressed!! The ingenuity of Jeremy Hoggards bus hitch blew me away. I've put together and assembled many things in my time and this is one of the easiest! Check out this threaded backing plate that fits perfect!

The hand hold worked perfectly!

After plate attached.

Bumper connected.

fits over exhaust great!

Here's some more images. The bumper worked way better than I could imagine. I'm going to be towing a 74 montgomery ward tent trailer with this and i think it's going to be perfect! I've already jumped on it. Thanks Jeremy!!! I'll leave you feedback also.

Nice hitch ideas but I'd like my hitch from the bottom of bumper, not sure if i'd beef up the bumber or have a seperate support across with two bars to the front a bit like the vw/porsche type that bolt to floor pan, (don't really want holes there though) Do think after looking at this thread I want the bumper seperate incase it gets hit, might not damage the hitch especially from a side corner hit? Seems everyone wants to run into me in my area:( won't really decide till I'm under the camper measuring...

Dont know if they still make um but there used to be a extractor that was tucked way up in the center or just to one side just for clearing a trailer hitch and had a single quiet muffler? It was made especially just for that purpose.

I would also be interested in seeing anyone who is running a vintage speed exhaust and a hitch, especially the sport exhaust for lowered buses.

I knew Gene Berg had the extractor for more clearance years ago so called and they said the company stopped making them? I dont think it was a drastic difference , maybe 1 1/2 inch raised up by making tighter bends in the extractor tubes to collector I think. Sad

Just installed my hitch from Jeremy rock jock. I have the super flow vintage speed exhaust that exits out of the stock cutout. Pretty stoked on how nicely it fit, now I gotta go clean my bumper....

How much can you realistically tow with one of these though? Without fishtailing on curves and being dragged back down hills anyhow....

I used to tow all the time with my stock bus. A puck will go behind a split beetle, you won't have a problem in a dualport bus.

get a trailer with brakes and it will be like it never happened. busses only have 100 pound tongue weight or so. Busses do just fine as long as the trailer does not way more than say 1200 or 1500 pounds and has brakes.
