In the Jeep world we refer to rigs like this as: shopping Mall Crawlers. Did they really need ladders on both sides of the safari rack? Not my cup of tea and hope for owners sake the Subie is EZ30 or a water boxer is going to blow his doors off! I wish I had his CV900 wheel centers he needs mine as they are later covers that stick out for maximum "bling" something this rig doesn't seem to have enough of already |

This rig is a daily driver for a very nice taos family.
It's pretty impressive in person. While it might not be for everyone, I think it will be perfect for knocking around the endless dirt roads around here. |
Did he do all the exterior steel work himself? If so it's a pretty ingenious rolling billboard for his abilities. _________________ _____________________

Looks great, dirt roads yes Moab no. All show no go! Bring it to Syncro Solstice, prove me wrong? And yes I would drive it around Taos. Looks like the engine was done 2 1/2 years ago 2.5 turbo should have all the power you need. But all the money put in it could of been spent better! Still nice van. _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . Agreed. The ironic thing is that many MANY people who don't own Vanagons think that they are really ugly vehicles. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

the same could be said about these vans...22 pages of comments

When you modify your van to this extent you will hear some feedback, good and bad. One has to recognize the craftmanship that went into it. A different thing is whether you would do the same or any of the mods to your own van. _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

Freedom of Speech. It is our right, but c'mon he is a fellow Syncronaut.
He has done stuff that is cool. It is his rig and if he enjoys all his additions more power to him. We should be nicer to everyone that enjoys these vehicles as we do. That is why we watch this forum.
I like it, and I too will wave at a fellow Syncro owner, regardless of what options they have done to their vehicle. Beauty is in the eye of the owner.
I spent quite a bit time looking at his rig at Volkswagens on the Green last year. And by the crowd around it so did a few thousand other people.
Right on! |

I wonder how it handles? It looks like a lot of weight on the front suspension. I like the pop-top shocks! _________________ 1990 Multivan 2.1 AT |

I am impressed by the Safari rack that tilts with the electric screw drives for old guys like me, maybe one century I'll think about copying that idea. Paint my CV 900 wheels anything other than silver....NFW! |

I don't mind admitting I like it. But I wouldn't want it unless it was functional for my usage. Overkill for me, but since the owner hasn't chimed in, maybe its still underbuilt for their use. _________________ Tim Potts

Beautiful, if overdone. I like the 70's stripeys! That's so much rollcage, it looks like an airport truck. The biggest downside to me is obscuring the rear lights. _________________ 1991 Westy |

It is kind of busy shall we say. Obviously quality worksmanship and many hours and dollars went into it. Time to take it out and thrash it a little. Lets see some scrapes on the rollcage and some brush sticking out of that rack! |

Since I was at the market, I popped down the 'zine aisle and bought the issue:

Glad to see a positive comment! So sad to see all the negative comments, someone built what they wanted, they designed, and hired great people and built what they wanted. Then someone posts this on the "Wall of Shame" thread

The "tough crowd" comment expresses what I was thinking as I read the negative comments. I guess we can expect criticism, founded or unfounded, just because it is the internet. Most of the negative comments about this van seem to be mean spirited and it leaves me feeling sorry, but the sorry feeling is more for the commenter than the van owner.
Clearly stated in the article is that the owner uses the van to get to locations he rides his bike or snow board. How does it make sense for anyone to leave comments about how it should be scratched up or if it will be super capable off road? May it be that there is some envy at the keyboard?
I would suggest that for the owner of the van, it would be more to his liking for those who are critical of the prowess of his van to go for a mountain bike ride with him or maybe go on a snowboarding trip. After one of those adventures, type critically to your heart's content. Or, maybe it would show that the owner doesn't deserve the criticisms in the way they've been doled out here.
Or, to say it another way: Let him pick the location. Then, when his super bitchin' Syncro can't go any further up the trail and you keep going, it may be a short lived feeling of victory when you finally have to stop or get stuck, and he continues up the trail on his Mountain Bike. I hope he would wave as he rode past.
