I bought a 76 bus with a 2.0 that was missing the F.I. And Dist. I have it on the bench. I installed a 009 and dual Webbers. I set the D pointing to #1 with the #1 approx. TDC. Started it on bench, fired right up. My Q. Should I set the timing 1st, or set the carbs? It idles rough. Can I set the timing with the rough idle? Thanks |

+1 on timing first. Must be in time or tuning the carbs is all for nothing. _________________ '71 Transporter "June" (traded a nissan hardbody + some $) (daily)

On the bench a sustained 3500+ RPM may be really exciting, set the timing by moving the distributor until it sounds pretty good and check with a light if you wish (~7.5 BTDC with the hoses off) then set up the carbs, then go back and do the timing at speed and the final carb tweak after it's installed.

With an 009 the advance will be full in before it gets to 3,000 RPM. So 29* BTDC when it reaches full advance. Like BD says go ahead and tweek the timing or the carbs so you can get it up to that full advance RPM. Your question about setting the timing with a rough idle is of no concern since you won't be setting it at idle.
Do the valve adjustment first. Cold engine if it has solid lifters. Then get it up to speed to do the timing. Finally, set the carbs. If they havn't been running on that engine previously then you are going to have quite a time getting them dialed in proper. And you will need a sync tool.
For the initial settings bouncing back and forth between ignition and carbs is no problem and may be necessary. Just so the order of final tune is valves, timing and carbs.
3500 on a bench might be a bit traumatic. But only 3000 is not as bad. Mine was sitting on the ground when I ran it in for the initial 20 minutes at 2000 RPM. Now that was immediatly at 2K after first firing and before any timing light or carb tuning. _________________ 71 Superbug

The neighborhood hoodlums take old machines up into the woods and blow them up, but it is so dangerous that even they can't watch what they are doing as they set the charge off. The act just leaves pieces of metal spewed everywhere. This would be a lot more fun as it takes a while and can be viewed the whole time. |
