I didn't know they made them that big. I have TIG rods, but they are way too small.
That would be better, because they are a lot longer.
I used the stick rods because I had a bunch of old ones in a box that weren't good anymore. They probably got wet. The flux just crumbles off them. |
Nothing wrong with re-purposing a product for another use. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Always so impressed every time I check out your build. So detailed, keep up the good work. I did my best with body gaps with my car but I'm still not happy with them. It just go so frustrating I had to call it good and move on. |

Thanks for the words of encouragement, as always..
Today was the 81St Sacto Bug-O
Type 3s represented, taking four (five?) of the top 20.
Jeff & Joel, getting honors, with Justin taking a well-deserved 'best motor' award.
Congrats, guys. Nicely done.
The judges there might just be acknowledging how hard it is to do a type 3 well..
Also scored something I wouldn't a dreamed of getting;
VW tools 294A and 294B.. $30?!?!
Well on my way to tooling up for a transaxle or two..
OK, doesn't really have much to do with my Fastback build here,
But,
A good excuse for not working on it all day... _________________ Bus Motor Build

Aint that the truth! Thanks for the nod. Next year you'll surely have yours done and out there. _________________ Justin |

Aww, shucks.. Thanks for the props.
Figured most have given up looking at this thread..
The main thing that happened is this;
Remember the guy with the blue bus from a few years ago?
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
We'll be getting this thing out of the way hopefully REAL soon..
A few things happened on the Fastback,
The painter continues to mud/sand/mud/sand.
I don't stop by there as much as I should because I'm scared he's gonna hit me up..
The wheels got done by the polisher,
There's this long job of taping off the polished rims so the centers can get re-plasted, primed, and painted.
Still trying to figure out some kind of color for the centers of the rims,
It's come down to the champagne color suggested earlier,
or some black chrome facsimile..
Either way, I'm picking out some crazy deep flake and heavy clear for the centers,
From the House of Kolor catalog.. Just keep flip-flopping on which.
Once this Bus gets out of my hair,
We'll get right back on it where I belong.

Gloss black and polished! I know its been done a bazillion times, but it'd be the most timeless look there is. _________________ Justin |

I’m a huge fan of cast or gun metal for the centres. |

Just checked some posted pictures of your suspensions. I was not able read them all. I just browsed the pages. Are those 911 irs and drums? The transmission looks porsche to me. _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

Aw shucks, guys,
Glad to see that anyone is still watching.
Been busy letting 'life get in the way'..
After Damon's bus got out of the way,
Then my bus got in the way.
At least we went and camped in it..
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
Epic luxury high-speed Grand Touring Resto-German Fastback,
Gets derailed by the nemesis of the aircooled world,
The "1776 with dual Kadrons"..
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
It should be wrapping up here soon.
The 2056 will be going right onto the stand after that POS T1 goes away,
It will be getting the bigger cam, and those heater boxes finished up.
Possibly a test-run on the stand, even..
Soon. I promise. Been WAY too long!
You can see the subframe and pan ready for finishing up in the background.
Painter was asking me to go and buy paint!
So,
This *should* be getting somewhere soon.
Thanks for staying tuned. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Awlright, Like I said.. Back at it.
First, went and dropped $1360 at the paint store.
Went and got another $1,000 out of the bank, and took it to Larry.
It's getting straighter.
Giving him another extra thou seems to help sometimes..
Xevin has suggested this color for the wheel centers - dark red.
Maybe with some more/thicker flake?
Darker Dark red?
What you think?
Would look pretty classy with polished rims, silver paint on the center cap logo detail, and chrome lugs..?
Here's a sad/ironic story..
Our last local speed shop - Volks Cafe closed a few moths ago. (RIP )
They let my hero Jim dig thru their junk after they closed, and he found an OG German forged steel 914 215mm flywheel!
Even sadder, his employer, Napa Carr Parts, closed their doors as well on very short notice.
Jim retired from doing VW machine work,
And the very last job he did for me was to surface and blast this same flywheel.. Which he just gave to me as a present.
It will go on my 'someday' Big 2270.
Poof! Just like that, Santa Cruz California is no longer a town with any real aircooled parts or machine shops at all.
The end of an era.
Never thought I'd see it..
You always think these things will be there; will be the same.
Support your local shop while you still got 'em folks. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Damn Santa Cruz, what a let down. But I agree with Clatter on supporting locals.

I'd have to see the color sprayed out on where it goes, to know whether or not I'd like it. It partly depends on how the metal flake lays/sprays out. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The world's most trivial Type 3 build grinds slowly along...
Damon came by last weekend;
Helped tape off the wheels for painting.
I used lacquer thinner to clean the remainder of rouge from the polishing process,
handing them off to Damon for masking.
The rims get masked with electrical tape - Ian the polisher says it's the best to use here.
Damon, being a professional painter by trade,
He can tape off a line like nobody's business...
Me, or one of the kids(?) might finish taping off all of the shiny areas.
Ian will be blasting the centers again to clean,
Then I'll probably prime them and sand out the flaws with high-build.
Finally they'll going to Larry to be shot in the booth, likely with that dark red I showed earlier.
It was a fun night, we finished off a growler of Tomorrow Today by our local Sante Adarius Brewing.. Good times, even if it wasn't exactly the most productive work session..
On another note,
I had the inside of the heater box shells ceramic coated.
The insides will get silver, to reflect heat back into the airstream
(at least that's the theory).
The outside of the boxes might get flat black?
Silver heater boxes kind of look a little over-the-top IMHO.
Silver seems to last the best, but, with as lumpy and hacked these boxes are,
i'd really rather they blended in and hid their many flaws.
Maybe some dark gray like factory?
Probably do silver for the header and muffler..
Will be welding them back together, and then we can decide.
Just have to get this beetle motor off my stand first,
That's all.. _________________ Bus Motor Build
