We picked up a 72 square back has original fuel injection. Hasn't ran in about 10 years.

Do we try and get it working or convert to carburetor?

Are you up for a challenge? Do like puzzles? Does originality matter to you? The factory fuel injection, when working correctly, runs very well and is quite efficient. There are folks here that can help you get it right, sell you parts, and celebrate your triumph. Or, throw some carbs on it, enjoy the way it just works, and send your fuel injection bits to Tram.

My 72 square parked for ten years, had a weber center mount carb...the very worst thing you could do. If it were mine, take the challenge and try the best you can to get the fuel injection working as it does work quite well. The previous owner cut all of the wiring out for the injection on my car. I had no choice but to source out the stock carb setup verses an after market carb set up. In the event you do decide to go with a carb setup the stock carb VW set is in my opinion the best way to go. Others will differ.
I dod source everything here in classfieds, carb intake linkage air cleaner. Volksbiz refurbished the carbs and they are like new on box when I got the back. Others will chime n for assistance.

I would try to get it working before replacing. First thing to ask is why was it parked in the first place. Maybe take a visual assessment first, how does the wiring look? Is everything intact?

The gentleman we got the car from bought it this was so we really don't know why. He was under the assumption that it needed a fuel pump....

Plenty of help here if you want to try.

Just resist the temptation to replace parts until you have positively identified them as faulty. It gets frustrating and expensive that way!

I agree completely. Maybe post up some pics of the engine so we can see what you've got and may need. My first guess is that the fuel pump is probably dead from the old fuel and dirt in it, common to being "parked".

Just mind the suffix letters on replacement part numbers. Generally, you can't mix and match parts form the three basic "generations" of FI parts (68/69, 70/71, 72/73).
