Hi Guys,
Hope you don't mind me posting here but this thread is the closest what I could find to ID an Air Filter.
I have a non walk through Westy from '70 and I am having problems finding the right Air Filter.
Unfortunately the Westy ewas hacked and had a Toyota engine in it which I am busy reverting to aircooled.
So from this thread an many others I googled it seems my Westy should have a filter platform onto which a filter clips that has a cable connected to the cooling flaps. BUT
My Westy does not have a platform and instead has a "pillar" . It could be that this was installed aftermarket but it actually looks genuine. There are some burn holes which could have been the welds of a platform, but I can't say.
Also on this thread there is a High Dust filter which could have been what my Westy should have had but the "pillar" is different.
So I have attached some photos and hopefully someone can shed some light.
Thanking you for responses.
Pedestal I should have?
Pillar on my Westy
Pillar top fixture looks original?
Bottom fixture
Plarform I got and position it should go?
High Dust Filter on similar pillar. |

This one if for a Type 4, T-127 industrial engine with a single center mounted carb.

You would have to remove that vertical bracket to mount the pedestal, it attaches to the wheel well where the bottom of the pillar is now.
That looks like the mount for the dusty conditions filter, the type 181 Thing uses the same part: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2387709
That one also has a vacuum controlled thermostat, no goofy cable system required. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

The Thing air cleaners typically don't either wear out or rust out, so there are a lot of them out there and not many buyer. |

After hunting for cables for half a decade, I’d gladly go with the Thing/dusty conditions filter if the bracket was already there.

Wow, thanks guys.
And thanks for all the photos they do make things a lot clearer.
I think I will try getting a thing filter as it will fit in the same way a Splitty filter fits (which I also have but intakes point in wrong direction).
Not sure how many Things were ever in South Africa but we also have a great forum and I might just get lucky.
Kind regards and many thanks
