|
|
I am a 26 year old female student and I just bought my first beetle. I have been reading some of the forums on here about the padded dash removal. I like this look much better, and I have a few questions. I have already removed the padding and the dash looks to be in good condition, however, I would like to replace some of the parts to look more natural. My problems are with the grab bar, the knobs, cigarette holder, and glovebox. Will older models of theses especially the glovebox, cigarette holder and grab bar, fit onto the 1970 model, say from a 1967? I would also like to replace the speaker grills with chrome ones, or black ones (my dash is black) with the chrome strip down the middle. Any one with past experience with these? |

Welcome to the samba!!
I believe all of those items from a 67 will fit a 70 except that I think the glove box door was trimmed down a little for the padded dashes starting in 68, but since you are removing the dash pad a 67-earlier might work fine.
Also the grab handle on 67 was angled upward more and thus I think uses a different mounting base.
1967:
My 1969 (same as your 1970):

They are pretty much the same dash. You might have to strategically place some stickers or magnets to cover up a couple of mounting holes but that's about it.

Wish I saved some of the threads for this, since its come up a bit. Heres a couple quick and dirtys on the subject.
Glovebox doors - old ones are not a bolt on - A lot of people seem to be OK with the door being too small for the opening. If you want to do it right, within the last couple months someone had a neat way of doing this. You had to remove the other skin of the door of the original and cut out the back of the early one - for some reason thinking that the cut a slot along the bottom or something.
Adding the chrome strips is not a bog deal - just get the strips and drill holes in the panels for the mounting clips.
Defrost vents on top - not sure if you can get ones made for non padded - I remember doing some careful trimming of mine to get them to sit right.
Older grab handles will go right on. Filling holes - you can try to find plastic or metal plugs and paint them - shouldnt look too bad. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

The bolt spacing and positioning is different with the earlier pre 67 oh shit handles.
You need to get a 68 onwards one from a non US bug that didnt have a padded dash or just fill the holes and run without, 73 and later beetles never had them. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

A few of the things you'll need are;
Type 3 dash knobs - they're shorter, don't stick out so much.
The defrost vents for a metal dash late model bug (like in Europe). These are available from Vw Heritage in the UK.
And here's the posting about the glove box door.

Here's a pic of mine (also a 70) with the door mod.
