Ok i know there are lots of posts about the heaters but here is another one. I want to install a bn4 into my 71 double cab (once its restored) i have a 6v heater which is immaculate but no good being 6v, a good 12v one and 2 boxes of bits. I am hoping most bits are there (no wiring loom but i could make that) but i have 2 timer switches for the dash, how many terminals should one for a bn4 have? I have one white and one black, both with 4 terminals but different part numbers, do they both do the same thing either for a bn4 or the 6?

Those switches work the same. Only difference is one is from a Type 4 and one is from a Type 3.
"963 107" is all that matters. The 411 is the Type 4, the 311 is the Type 3. The letter C is the 3rd or 4th revision of that switch. _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.

311 is for a BN2. Not sure if that relay works the same as for a BN4. |
All the mid 70-74 buses with stock heaters here in Canada came with that 311# switch. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Not much info out there on how to install the BN4 in a double cab. The type2 site is down as is the vintage bus site. The 7 page bn4 manual in a double cab is not particularly clear as to the routing of the air hoses from the rear through the treasure chest area and on into the cab. Looks like there is a unique fresh air return plenum on the nose of the heater which is different from the bus one.
Any other references or pics? Thanks. |

I'll get some pics in a few days, the truck requires a different outlet duct that's circular and straight, there's also a transition piece that goes on the LH tank closeout panel and an outlet grill similar to the ones in early Westfalias. I've never seen a recirculating heater in a truck, usually they just have the grill on the end and draw air from the engine compartment.
What year truck is this going into? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

mines going in a 71 small rear light bay. haven't looked at routing the duct past the gas tank yet thats the least of my worries with this project! thought it would be straight forward but may have to have a better look _________________

Here's the truck only outlet duct, it's got a bimetal controlled damper in it to stop the icy draft when the heater isn't in use:
And another view also showing the inlet grill (it's the same as pre 72 bus):
There's a large paper/foil hose that connects to this fitting in the LH tank access panel (tank side shown):
Here's the front (treasure chest side) of that fitting:
Then there's another hose that leads to the seat pedestal on a DC or bulkhead just below the M plate on a SC, the metal sleeve in the end pushes into the fitting in the tank access panel and can be slid in or out to heat the treasure chest on a SC or underseat storage on a DC if desired. It's on the right in this pic which also shows the hangers that keep it up against the roof of the compartment:
Here's the factory cutout in the engine compartment for the heater install, there's a stamped depression there with the same shape in non heater trucks:
And another view from forward:

wonder why the round tube coming out of the heater and not the rectangular as normal? is it just to do with the shape of hole in the bulkhead? the set up i have has the rectangular outlet feed _________________

Eberspacher was used in all kinds of applications in all kinds of different car makes. Ive seen that round snout used on large passenger bus applications for sure. Im sure that running that long tube up to the cabin made it more practical. _________________

Agreed, why make all sorts of funny ducts when a hose will do fine. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

What fixes thru the flange with the 2 holes in with grommets, or wot does the heater attach to? Thanks for all the input.. _________________

2-6mmX~25mm bolts with flat washers bolt it to the bulkhead, there's nuts welded in on factory installations and loose nuts on dealer installs, you can see the holes at the top of the cutout here. (there are a couple of depressions to aid in drilling IIRC), the rear is supported by the same pedestal stand as used in bus installations. (still a broken off bolt and part of a grommet on one of the holes in the pic)
