My nephew had surgery today for brain cancer!

This past year:
2 cousins with bladder cancer
1 friend with bladder cancer
1 friend's 35 year old daughter with breast cancer
3 members at my synagogue passed from cancer
This is why....
$3225 in just a week and the matching has not kicked in.

Well, today was the event and this was my 13th year. As usual it was a dance party for all the teams on Long island that raised money for MSKCC. There were a few new teams and some old ones. One was a family team of 8 that were riding for their 6 year old son/grandson. Another team was honored for surpassing $1,000,000 since they started. We were a bit short handed so I took (2) 45 minute spin sessions and can truly feel the years catching up.
One of the keynote speakers was a doctor @ MSKCC. He told us how the donations will be funding research and clinical trials by the summer. How every day new treatments and options are being found/. Then his tone changed and he got very personal, when he spoke about his sister being diagnosed with multiple myeloma. How the tumor was removed and she was responding to treatment. He explained that just 3 years ago, these treatments were not available.
This was a record year for us as were blew past previous totals and raised $127,726 for the 2nd largest total from Long Island... and we did it with just 2 bikes when other teams had many more.
I want to thank every one of you for the continued support. And I told the family, of the 6 year old, I'll make sure to say hello to them net year. Thanks again

I was out of country on travel so missed it this year but link is still active..just like the efforts to prevent and cure cancer
Mom was a cancer survivor and kicked it in teeth for 93 years!

Sorry to hear that Mike. I am fighting that battle myself. It will be 2 years in March. 2% of those with my diagnosis live to the 2 year mark.
So far my exceptional cancer team at Mass General has kept me upright but my time is coming.
I sit here typing this as I watch my wife and son eat dinner. My desire to eat comes and goes and eating is work. But I promised my family I would fight. So many side effects from the treatment that sometimes things are tough. But...as I like to say...I am still vertical  and any day that I am is a good day. The time I spend with my wife and son is fantastic. I try to stay positive, and both my wife (as my caretaker) and I see mental health professionals to work through the process of my impending death.
No one fights this disease alone...and if you know someone who is suffering take 5 minutes and reach out. It always helps to talk to someone. I get texts from friends every day asking if we need something like food or rides. Thank goodness we don't yet, but its comforting to know I have such good friends and family. |
