|
|
My drivers window is a little stiff towards the top of the door frame and ive broken a set of replacement and aftermarket cranks. Personally I would rather be killed by my cranks in a crash.
I pulled these from a late 70's early 80's Volvo sedan. The snout was a bit long so I cut about 3/16 of an inch off. There is a raised line on the snout and I cut it there and sanded it. The Volvo's pan head screw is correct for the vanagon also and they do clear my aftermarket speakers. These are quite strong and most likely the last time I have to mess with my cranks.

Good alternative. Yeah, the original brown cranks have the life span of a snowflake in a volcano.
Another durable crank is from the Jetta (also available in brown). |

Now you should mess with your window and see why it doesn't roll up properly.
It's better to fix the problem rather than just create a solution. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

Recommend that you fix the stiff window mechanism, rather than force the window by using a stronger handle. if the window is real stiff, other components will wear faster than normal, specially when you can crank harder with the new handles. I guess if the window seizes up you can add a solid steel handle with an extra long arm for more leverage and force it even more.
fix the problem, don't bandaid it. _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

This is a video from Go Westy about the window operation. Pretty cool.

the regulator can fail (stripped parts), maybe not next, but that would be a failure mode. _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Thanks for posting the GoWesty window video. It didn't actually say anything about how to check or fix problems with the window lifting mechanism. Is there a source (previous thread on TheSamba, perhaps) that will go through the problems that can cause the window to be hard to raise?
Mine is not hard enough that I'm concerned about breaking the handle but I'd like to know if it's a good idea to lube somewhere, with what and possible adjustments I could make.
Also, there's a white nylon guide "button" that rides in the vertical channel inside the door. One of mine is broken. Are those still available?

On the list is renewing my door seals, I had everything apart for paint. The passenger door works great while the last 2 or 3 inches gets stubborn on my divers door. It was a pita wrestling in the wing window frames and seals. In fact I just found that I never installed the screw in the top of the wing window frame...a couple of quick grips to pull it over, install the screw and its all good. I stall plan to replace all the window seals after a new tent, carpet kit and appliances. |

These are what I put in my van. '85-92 golf or jetta handles are an exact fit and definitely an upgrade from the vanagon handles. They easily clear aftermarket speaker covers and they're a dime a dozen at pick n pull/pull a part yards _________________ '88 vanagon*****'91 gti 1.8t*****'04 r32*****'11 suburban z71 |

My old cranks were cranky...then, I found early Jetta window cranks, on the Samba or Ebay, not sure now...right color, and sturdy, but no clearance for door speakers.

You can get spacers for the window crank handles from a VW cabriolet, late 80's to 90's The back window handles have spacers on them to clear the extra clearance for the top. The spacers and screws will fit Vanagons. |

i found that with the el cheapo window keep fit window winders, the knob part always cam off of the handle, a trip to ace hardware, and a $1.49 got me wooden knobs for my winder handles, and they've been fine since, i did have to epoxy the screw into the knob, to stop it backing out, but they've been on there 2 years already, without issue _________________ lucy our westy
