Tim and crew...
My Super is a 1972. It originally had the air-pressure washer bottle and the wiper stalk on the steering column had the rubber washer tubes going in and out of it for some kind of pressure switch.
The air-pressure washer system is gone and I have purchased a water bottle with an electric motor in it.
Before I install a push botton in my dash or something, I am wondering if the stock wiper stalk on the Super Beetle has an internal electric switch already. And, if so, I am wondering which prongs leading out of the steering column wiring harness would be used to signal the electric washer pump.
Thank you all for your anticipated generosities. |
Buggeee,
No beetle (except 1979+ and some Mexi-beetles I believe) have any 'electrical switch' for the windshield washer. Essentially, the washer 'switch' is really just a valve which allows the pressurized fluid (from the bottle) to flow through the wiper stalk 'valve' and squirt the windshield.
There are those who 'adapted' the stock stalk to make it electric:

But I personally just put a push button in next to the steering column and called it a day

I remember Joel from Australia speaking about a switch connection on some stock washer arms at the column. Can’t remember which thread, but there were photos showing this connection at the stalk.

Here's the old thread for that. some of the pictures are gone.
Aftermarket 72 and up column wiper switches had the extra BLACK wire for the electric washer pump, mine had one when I got the car and the intermittent mod with the extra relays is swell.

I installed one of these kits in my '68 last summer. The reservoir/pump and some of the hoses are good, the rest of the kit is a joke and should be discarded.
I ran power through an inline fuse to a momentary button mounted in the dash...lights up blue when pressed for a nice color-coded effect, lol. Reservoir is mounted to the back of my spare tire using some plastic-handled nuts and bolts to keep it out of the way yet make it a tool-less effort to remove it in case the tire is needed. Fluid hose connects directly to the washer nozzles. It's simple and works great. |
