Nice beetles, the "rainbow" picture of the green one is excellent!

Yes, mine has the "jump" too, it seems that now all the cars from that era had that alarm removed.... _________________ homepage

my '97 has the key switch original to the car. the alarm works but is not a big deterrent given that, as you know, a cylinder key lock can be easily opened. _________________ cars:

Was that keyhole for an alarm system? VW Canada has a '92 or '93 Beetle in the showroom of their head office that's never been on the road and it has one of these as well. Just always been curious about it. |
They were put in around '99 or '00. My '96 does not have the key switch, for the earlier sedans the alarm relay had an antenna and it was deactivated by a button on a key fob.
The module can been seen in the first picture, I had removed it from between the two relays near the fuse panel (and 'jumped' the circuit to disable the alarm). The antenna can been wrapped around (gray cable) the box near the foam in the second picture.
I have since dis-assembled the alarm module and permenantly by-passed the circuit internally. In that way the module has been plugged back into it's spot between the fuses as it was when the car was new. The antenna has been removed.

Being curious.. are those black and grey (80 & 30) relays part of the alarm system, or something else? |

they are part of the engine management system. relay 80 is fuel pump relay (with fuel pump fuse behind it) and 30 is ECU relay.
(edit: hopkin, your rear fog light switch -yellow cable with the inline fuse- looks like it's hooked up in the exact same way as mine. is the switch itself wired to break the ground side -switch lights up dimly with running lights and fully when pulled- or the hot side -switch lights up only when pulled?) _________________ cars:

I'm not sure, I'm travelling this week and do not have access to my car
I can tell you this, the rear fog light will only turn on if I have the headlights on, can be any one of the City lights, Hi or Low beams. The light in the switch glows dimmy when off, and brighter when the rear fog light is turned on. |

Are you sure about city lights? mine doesn't work with them, only with hi/lo beams. (edit: this is actually a legal requirement in europe, my little SEAT does the same)
from your description the switch itself is wired to break the ground side like mine. _________________ cars:

Garba:
I think you're right and I'm mistaken. If I leave the Hi/Lo Beam on when I turn the key off, they turn off and the City lights turn on. It would be odd for the rear fog light to be on also.
Here there is no regulation about rear fog lights, they are allowed and placement must not confuse with brake lights (makes sense), but you don't have to have them. City lights are also not required and rare to see here. (We do have DayTime Running Lights, which are not the same as City lights). If you have front fog lights, they cannot be on when the Hi beams are on (again makes sense). We also have amber lights on the front, known here as parking lights, which is typically the amber signal light is on (at a lower intensity) when the headlights are on. This is done with a 2 filament bulb (1157) and slightly different wiring. My car does not have this, so it looks 'odd' at night here with no amber lights showing.
It looks especially 'odd' at dusk when I run the City lights, they have an eerie glow that no other car has. |

originally our cars woud have had this kind of set up, too. when I sorted out the wiring for my side repeaters I found the third lead going to the amber lamps in the front bumper had been cut off and a new red wire added in its place to feed the city lights grafted to the headlight buckets. _________________ cars:

Alright thanks GArBa.
Cip1 has been selling new metal trunk panels for a few years but, no description was given on their site as to what that bracket was exactly for.
A little different from what was on earlier Germany bugs.. I wasn't used to seeing it closer..
Thanks for the pics and info, hopkin and GArBa.. |

yep, that's the relay mount plate. the angled part on the right (looking from the front of the car) also holds the main ground point in the trunk area (the part with all the blue insulated terminal on hopkin's car) _________________ cars:

Looks like the rearview mirror is useless with the top down. Small price to pay. |
I took this picture last fall while driving. I held the camera above the roof line, but it might give you an idea of what you would see in the rear view.

Mine may not be a Beetle, but 2 out of the three requirements for the thread have been met. I just picked this up not long ago. Since the theme of Brazillian and VW is the topic I thought would share with you my choice for that combination. It is a 1983 Amazonas 1600DP. They were produced in Brazil. 450 units were made. Chain driven. And it only weighs in at almost 1,000lbs when fuel is added. Good thing it has reverse!

@j.pickens: Nice ragtop!
@all:
To anyone with a 1600i engine, be aware there is a fire hazard in the engine compartment. The wiring that goes over the cooling tunnel can wear through and short the ignition wire. The ignition wire is not connected with a fuse (like on all beetles), so it will make the wire burn when shorted.
See the pictures in this german forum thread: http://forum.1600i.de/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=888#p5493
I've added a plastic tube around the wiring to prevent it:

Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow:
OMNICAR published a bulletin regarding this (and was included in the post Gerrelt referenced). Here is the bulletin, I hope you can read German
