I am a big fan of the digifant engine. I live in Mexico and my local garage has the VW software (he worked for VW). Many people here tear them apart, because the sensors are expensive to replace, compared to putting a carb on.

Man, I really want a "modern" Bug someday. I own an '03 New Beetle and would love to complement it by having a classic-style Bug from the late 90s or the early 2000s. _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

Hi! Nice bug you have, I'm a big fan of "brazilian" rims with the square slots.
ps. hopkin, notice the keyed alarm on a '95... _________________ cars:

x2 agreed, I noticed the keyed alarm on the '95. I also like the look of the Brazilian rims. I considered trying to get a set of those before I found my Antares rims. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

They call those wheels ‘ecologico’ here!
I wonder if they work better cooling front disc brakes?
They sell mini hub caps for them in chrome or black.
I have also seen people just put the chrome strip on the outside of them, looks pretty cool (see pic).
They also look good widened.
Seem to be the cheapest wheel for sale used here, is also pretty random which vochos have them!

as promised, here's the pic of the VIN tag on the B pillar of my bug:
while I was taking it, I told myself "well, you may as well take pics of the other VIN/ID numbers' locations on the car and post them all".
And so I did:
Usual location below the rear seat (if your bug is a USofA re-pan you would not have these); if you still have the factory sticker down there it will list again your VIN and engine number together (better than ordering a birth certificate):
engine number is of course also on the engine:
every ACD engine I've seen has the same "crooked" digits. it looks like the numbers were hand-punched on the block.
need another VIN? it is again stamped on the body inside the front luggage compartment, just above the fuel tank:
as in Bob's case, this last VIN is usually the only one left on re-panned bugs sold in the USA.
additionally, in the back apron you'll find the production code:
in conjunction with the model year letter in the VIN this tells you the date of manufacture of your car.
lastly (here I'm recycling old pics) euro-imported beetles had VIN plates in the spare wheel well made by the importer, either in metal as on hopkin's car on with a simple laminated paper as in my car here:
note that all such plates had "Volkswagen AG" as the manufacturer instead of "Volkswagen de México, S.A. de C.V.". Not sure of the reason of this fact.
I made a better-looking VIN plate in the style of the contemporary VW VIN Stickers (again, just laminated paper)
hope someone finds this useful! _________________ cars:

Great pics Garba! Thanks...
Your VIN tag on the pillar is the same as mine, the VIN tag on the white Beetle I saw in San Diego was different.
I don't have the production sticker on the tunnel. I noticed that they painted the inside of your car, leaving the area around the VIN with the grey.
My car has just the grey paint in that area, with the colour of my car its hard to notice the grey paint being different from the silver/gold (champagne) paint.
(There was a discussion earlier on this thread about whether or not VW of Mexico painted the inside of the cars).
I also made up a newer VIN tag (like the one in your picture) from the files you sent me a couple years ago. I was going to have a metal one made up but I never got around to it.

I've had an laser engraving shop create me two replicas of the type plates for my beetle:
I used free progam Inkscape to replicate the design, and send them a file in a certain format. They used the file to laser engrave the plates.
I know they can do an inverse (black background - silver letters) too. That way you could replicate the original sticker in metal quite accurately.
They actually send me one of the plates inverse by accident.
I can send you the inkscape file if you want to give it a try. I used a engraving shop in Germany (via eBay), but I guess there should be one around your area too. _________________ homepage

is that program capable of reading other file formats? IIRC mine was a photoshop image (I've it temporarly lost the file, I'm sure it's somewhere in one of my HDs but I'm not sure which one... ) _________________ cars:

Question over here from the German cousin I'm looking into putting a oil filter pump combo on my 73 standard beetle
Could anyone confirm/take a picture of the mounting of the OEM spin on oil filter & pump combo?
Mainly I'm interested to know whether the pump uses studs in the case with bolts to hold the pump or uses bolts ran directly into the engine case?
Many thanks in advance! _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle

studs. I don't have a pic of mine right now but this photo of hopkin's car is quite clear:

Thanks GArBa, exactly what I needed! I swore I looked through this whole thread, but I must have missed Hopkin's picture. _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle

I think it was in a different thread, found it in his gallery. _________________ cars:

Now watchout because if you use a stock Mexican oil filter adapter it might not fit, try an EMPI of a brand used by a parts company like CIP1 or Amazon for the pump and filter kit

I don't really know, but I think it will not work properly. Inkscape is a vector based program, instead of a photo-editor. The laser engraver needs the vectors so it can be used to steer the laser.
Do you have the size of the sticker? Height and width? _________________ homepage

thanks, if it needs a vector it works the same as the laser engravers we have at work and it won't work with my file. _________________ cars:

Thanks Sam, figured as much. MidAmerica Motorworks website lists an 'OEM Mexican' pump but it does look different and claims it fits 70s beetles. Additionally, another 70s bugger was talking just yesterday about his Mexican filter and states it fits fine. I figure it's the MAMW version, not a true OEM Mexican part. Gonna try either MAMW or CBPerformance. I personally have had poor experience with EMPI, so I'd prefer to stay away.
Thanks again guys! Just wanted you MexicanBug owners to weigh in, you guys are a great resource! _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle
