Could be the coil, my coil made a similar noise. It never failed but I did replace it with a cheap one I found on Amazon. That one failed after a year, so I bought an OEM one from Antonio, which has worked fine for the past few years.

what you mean "by the computer and distributor cap"? they are quite far apart, the computer (ECU) is below the seat and the distributor on the engine. you mean both are buzzing?

didn't notice your answer as we posted at about the same time, coil may be a possibility. Personally I'm using a Beru coil and have no issues with it. my old one didn't make any noise but Temic coils can go bad. It's a part used on a lot of watercooled VWs too, so any reputable brand should work.

I just checked my car, I have a Temic installed, so far no problems but every once it a while it buzzes when I turn the key to the on position (but not when the engine is running [that my getting old ears can hear Smile ]).

Maybe I'll see if I can locate a Beru coil for a spare.

buzz near the distributor can be from a bad coil, buzz at the ECU, no idea. unless your connector has somehow come loose.

So, I'm replacing my heat exchangers. I've got my car lifted on jack-stands and the rear-wheels off. My attempts to loosen the top nut where they connect to the exhaust manifold have been fruitless. Unless I'm missing something (hoping that I am), it seems as though I'll need to drop the engine to access them properly. Any advice on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

You will need to remove the fuel injectors and rails if you drop the engine. The instructions on 1600i.de says that it can be done without, but I tried to remove my engine with them on, no luck.

I had a difficult time re-positioning the engine to remove them, but once they were off it was pretty easy to remove the engine.

Hopkin, if I'm hearing you correctly, I do need to remove the engine to replace the heat exchangers?

No, I was only commenting on my experience, if you have to remove the engine.

But, as I look into my crystal ball, I predict a similar project in my near future:

Good afternoon!

The season is officially open, in a week around 200 kilometers I did.

Link

Today was excellent weather and we since morning were engaged in car.
During the winter "doggie" of the fixer of the hand brake lever took off, it was necessary to adjust the hand brake and to replace a lever casing.
1. I replaced a washer reservoir on original with the electric pump which was put in a drain since 1982, but on this model I was pneumatic which used air pressure in a spare wheel. Unfortunately. a complete set in that to find anywhere any more
2. Trifles such as boots and caps are established.
3. Pressed with liqud front torsion bars.
4. High-voltage wires of ignition, and a spark plug are replaced. In 3 and 1 cylinders a situation good, and here 2 and 4 candles strongly black, it is necessary to deal with the carburetor.

Link

5. Mineral oil in the engine is replaced with the most viscous 20W50, and also a filter in the crankcase.

The following steps, replacement of the fuel level sensor and to carry out its calibration. Further already I showed the car to children from ChipsAway Moscow
that tinted some problems on a car body and executed polish of a car body.
Generally we prepare for the VAGBURG festival which will take place in Yakhroma place which situated near Moscow 26.05.2018.

Hopkin, I managed to remove my passenger side heat-exchanger. To get at the top nut at the exhaust manifold connection required this cobbled assembly of ratchet extensions—including a wobble-head extension. Documented in this photo for when I put the new one on. Smile

Played around with my Mexicans a bit:
Washed and waxed my 1983 selvas green Beetle and took my 1984 velvet red Beetle (samtroter Sonderkäfer) for a spin in spring;
