Maybe obvious, but have you checked the starter? Maybe give the solenoid a light tap, it might be stuck.
Another possibility is that your battery is weak, you could try a boast.
I don't recall, but I think one of the wires is hot on the starter, so be careful.
I'm just guessing here , I wish I could be more help. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

AC condenser airflow question.
How does the airflow around the condenser?
Does the engine fan move this air ?
How much Freon does the system specifically hold.
I started with 1.5lbs. Of R134a. (evacuated it first to weigh a specific charge), .5lbs was initially in the system)
Gauge readings were good at idle
30/275. — system cooled. (Not cold, just cool)
However with a fan blowing on the engine bay,
The head pressure creeps 325ish.
Now I don’t expect it to be much lower considering the setup.
But was curious.
I suspect the system holds more than 1.5
At a lesser 1.25 charge it doesn’t cool at all.
Anything over 1.5 and the head pressure creeps to 350
Thanks for any help or operating specs

Hi,
I picked up this 2000 Mexi a few weeks ago and I'm working my way through some of its issues.
It's a Sedan Clasico which was imported into the UK and converted to RHD by Beetles UK.
And now a request...
The wiring to the alarm switch on the engine lid has been cut back. I can't see it anywhere in the engine bay so I wondered if anyone had a picture of their engine bay showing the route of the wire so I can try and trace it and reinstate it. As it is, I can't use the alarm because it thinks the engine lid is open so it just goes off all the time.
Thanks in advance,
Steve |

IIRC it enters the harness in the plastic corrugated hose above the fan housing on the left side of the car. I'll check saturday if nobody else chimes in. _________________ cars:

Here's the wiring for the alarm switch on my car, as Garba says "it enters the plastic corrugated hose above the fan housing on the left side of the car":

Took a pic of another cool production sticker from my bug's beam; if I read correctly it's week 24 of 1997:
And another pic of my new optibelt belt:

It looks like my beam was manufactured in week 23 of 1996:
I took that picture a few years ago, and at the same time a picture of an oil change sticker on my door (dated Aug 2001):
I've left the sticker there, but the ink (writing) is a little more faded now. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

I have one similar sticker that was put there by the dealer that made the last oil change before I started doing them myself. I too am keeping it as a souvenir, now I track oil changes on a note in the glovebox.
thank you for the pic of you beam's sticker, I could not get the "Q" on the right side as while the rest was just covered in grease and dirt, that part was painted over with bedliner on my car.
...wait a minute, where is your grease nipple in that pic _________________ cars:

Here's a wider angle, you can see the grease nipples to the left of the sticker:

when properly put together, FI works as in any modern car. moreover, with a cast crank there is not too much room for power improvement even with carbs.
soon or later you'll sort out the gremlins, and you won't regret having stayed with FI. _________________ cars:

Type1Japan had a carb converted Mexican Beetle, look back on this thread. I know he had problems with it as well. (He has since sold the car).
I agree with Garba, I would keep the FI, but if you really want carb, go the whole way in and replace the engine. You may find a buyer ( ) interested in your old set up. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

I had a bit of an embarrassing moment yesterday at a Cruise In . When I went to leave my starter decided it was time to die so I had to get a push to start the car.
The PO had changed the starter out in the UK about 10 years ago, so the one installed was not a VW starter.
Fortunately I had a spare Bosch starter so I swapped it out tonight, here's the old one:
The Bosch starter has a bit of a smaller body:
No problem though, and it was easier to get at the top bolt with the new starter:
Note: I removed the heater tube and charcoal canister for easier access to the starter.
The new starter is working just fine _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

The new starter looks good.
They must be using some newer technology/different materials to get it smaller like that. _________________ homepage

I'm new to this thread so please direct me to the right place if my question has already been addressed. I have a 1997 Mexican Beetle with a bad engine. I want to install a regular non FI 1600 e/g in it. Can I do this and utilize the existing e/g harness? Or does someone make an aftermarket e/g harnesss for this retro fit conversion? Engine will have a carb, 009 dist, coil, and will use an alternator with a built in regulator. Will I still need the ECU pluged in? I hoping this will be an easy thing to do. Thanks for your help.

I've seen a couple mexi bugs converted to carb with various degrees of hacking but never a complete engine swap. I don't think there is a plug&play harness for this application, you'll have to modify the existing one or use a harness from a carbed beetle and rewire the car. actually you are going to need a lot less of what's there both in the front and in the rear. _________________ cars:
