1.Paul where you have your starter at in that cluster I had a number 37 relay do not know the reason.... will have to have another look under there...

2. Gentleman with the swap out question I have been told if done right should work plus the wire harness can be re-used but you will lose the computer injection system and fuel pump as the fuel pump is totally different from the mechanical one that you will put in.... if you have success let us know

I believe with the complete e/g swap I'll need power for the oil sending unit, coil, distributor, alternator and alternator warning light. I assume that I can just trace these wires and splice into the existing FI e/g harness and add the appropriate wire ends to power the above listed items. I'll tape off the FI connectors that will not be used with a regular carb e/g. My hope is to chat with someone that has already successfully done this.

#37 is a superseded part, it seems to be something related to old jetronic systems.

New to the forum.

I recently bought a 2001 MexiBug. Since I've been driving it, I've noticed that the generator light and brake warning light are sometimes lit, but extremely dim. So dim, you cannot see it in the daylight unless very close to the speedometer. Occasionally they go out completely like normal, but I have only been able to observe this at night.

Occasionally, the brake warning light will flicker with engine RPM at idle, and come on solid for maybe half a second while driving.

Yesterday leaving work, the generator light and brake warning came on solid. I stopped to ensure I still had a fan belt in place, then drove home and checked the voltage at the alternator running. It measured around 11.6v which I feel as too low. After it sit for about 4 hours, I started it to see if the lights would repeat the same issue. To my amazement, both warning lights went out after startup.

Today, I don't get a generator light at all. It will not come on when the ignition switch is turned like usual. Being around a bug or two, I know if that light isn't working the alternator will not charge. After I test the bulb in the speedometer to make sure it works, what is the next step in diagnosing this issue? Anyone have any ideas about the cause?

I'm curious, did you solve the issue?

edit: made this video to explain what to check as I was having similar issues:

Time to put some Brazil in the mix: found this really interesting video on the very last "fusca" bug to be assembled in that great country:

Link

it is of course in portuguese but any italian or spanish speaker should be able to pick up most of the story, if not here's a synopsis:

this car has the highest VIN and latest production date for 1996 when "fusca" production stopped for the second time, yet it isn't a fancy "serie ouro" final edition but a regular "fusca itamar" (albeit in luxury trim).
Turns out the first owner was an elderly gentleman who just wanted one of the last "fuscas", but production had halted one moth before and all "new" bugs were already sold out. Luckily his son-in-law who held a management position at VW do Brazil (then part of the Autolatina JV with Ford do Brazil) was friend with another VW production manager and they arranged for a batch of five more "fuscas" to be built (with leftover parts, spares and even some "kombi"interior trim), the last of wich, with VIN ending in 6619, was later sold to said older gentleman in a ceremony officially aknowledging its particular status. All the car's history was then lost until the current owner, who's the guy appearing in the video, started sleuthing and reach out to the original owner's family.

all credits of the video of course go to its poster mr. Luciano Simões.

I feel I am now getting no crank on the Starter and the clicking in or about the Electrical ignition/distributor ... So I am thinking it might be the electronic ignition
Sucks being tight for Cash

Garba, thanks for posting. There is very little info about the Brazilian cars. That video shows some nice shots of the interior.
I wish I spoke Portuguese (...or any other second language Smile ).

Right I am guessing here but since I have no crank and now no clicking in the puter and the Distributor/ Electrical ignition I am guessing that the Distributor/ Electrical ignition has gone the way of the DoDo… the parts list for the new ignitor cap parts are out dated anyone have a good number for this???
Thanks Sam

Antonio has new distributors, probably cap and rotor as well. I was able to buy a new cap and rotor at my local VW dealer a couple years ago, here are the PN's off of my receipt:

Cap: 051-905-207
Rotor: 052-905-225-C

Thanks for posting that, GArBa!

Very interesting story. I don't know it's because this was made with left over parts, or this is somewhat representative of a 1996 Brazillian beetle, but there are a lot of differences with the 1996 Mexican beetle.
I noticed these:

    wheels
dashboard (with square speedometer! Probably from the Golf?)
    different door panels
    vent window latch
indicators on the fenders (also bumper without indicator cutouts)
chrome headlight rings (might be added later?)
rear decklid, the vents have a different shape.
    different injection system on engine?
    side mirrors
vent in front decklid (that doesn't even look like the old german one)

You would think the Mexican and Brazillian factory would have used the same parts to save cost..

Very interesting story. I don't know it's because this was made with left over parts, or this is somewhat representative of a 1996 Brazillian beetle, but there are a lot of differences with the 1996 Mexican beetle.
I noticed these:

You would think the Mexican and Brazillian factory would have used the same parts to save cost..

Hi Gerrelt, what you notice is typical of the late brazilian bugs:

wheels (square slots, used also in the early '90s on mexis)
dashboard (with square speedometer! Probably from the Golf?) (introduced IIRC in 1981, the speedo is a VDO do Brazil specific one as it has a square face but a round body to use the old mounts; dash panel was not modified apart from the cutout on the left for headlights' switch)
different door panels (typical of the late brazilian production -itamar & ouro)
vent window latch (as hopkin noted, brazilian bugs never got the bigger side windows so the vent pillar is different from the german & mexican bugs)
indicators on the fenders (also bumper without indicator cutouts) (Brazil never got the bumper indicators. bumpers' shape is also slightly different)
chrome headlight rings (might be added later?) (no, they are typical of late brazilian production)
rear decklid, the vents have a different shape. (supposedly they used that arrangement to be able to fit a rain tray with four rows of vents, but this was later dropped and the vents stayed that shape. "brazilian declids pop out sometimes as cheap replacement panels)
different injection system on engine? (no injection used, the "fusca itamar" uses a twin carb setup with a catalytic converter behind the rear apron and the silencer hung in the left rear fender. also, the heater boxes are not used to heat the car but rather as preheaters for the carbs)
side mirrors (typical brazilian items, they too show up sometimes as cheap spares)
vent in front decklid (that doesn't even look like the old german one) (AFAIK the front vent is more or less the same, but the shape of the cowl is different to allow left-parking wipers on the older windshield)

there are a lot of other interesting differences in brazilian bugs, such as the stamped rather than cast rear body mounts and the specific lifting points, I'm digging a lot in these details and it's very interesting as you say because one can safely say that a brazilian and mexican bug from the same period are actually very different cars.

Thanks Sam

Can't remember, is the battery good? have you tested the starter motor?

I just arrived home from an 1800 km road trip in my Beetle. No problems with the car, even in the heat (up to 36C, 95F).

Took lots of pics, here's one...

My latest purchase, just arrived from the UK. Smile

This speedometer has been modified by the UK importer Apple 2000 for use in the UK (to show miles per hour):

The Apple 2000 face plate can removed to show the original face plate. I'm not going to install it (unless my speedo fails), but the price was great and it's cool!
