Welcome...

Contact Antonio Trejo, you can search for his contact info here on Samba or by the userid PartsVW on facebook. You can replace the muffler/catalytic convertor or there is a cheaper 'sport' exhaust available (if you don't need to do emissions). He will be able to provide cost and availability.

Btw hopkin, there is an o-ring on the filler neck bayonet fitting, I don't have access to mine right now to take measurements unfortunately.

Many $$ Sad . I bought one a few years ago, along with new heater boxes, crossover pipe, oxygen probe, gaskets, etc. I'll be dropping my engine (maybe later this year) and I'll replace the parts, although I may hold off until my car fails emissions (to extend the life of my newer parts).

We do emissions here once every 2 years, next time for me is 2019. If it passes than I can use my existing setup up until 2021.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'll see if I can track one down. I'm in San Diego for a few weeks Smile , so it will be a while before I can get back to my car Sad .

Again sorry with all of the questions but what does everyone use or recommend as far as oil, oil filter and air filter? No manual or marking on the engine.

No problem with the questions, keep 'em coming....

I use 0w40 Synthetic Mobil:

I buy the oil filter at the VW dealer, sorry I'm not near my car and I don't recall the part number but it is the same one that the watercooled cars use.

I'll post it later, if I can find the number.

Castrol semi-synt 15W-40 is what I use. Oil filter either MANN W719/5 or W719/30. Air filter can't remember the model number but is the same as a 70s bug. I use the MANN brand also for that. MANN and MAHLE/KNECHT were the OEM for these items.

DUP:
Hi, everybody!
The reason of replacement of a steering box - big effort on a wheel.
New steering box TRW brand lie in a garage long ago and I waited for the installation on the car.
Previously having adjusted efforts and a backlash it is installed on the car (advice to all - don't trust factory adjustments).
As some elements didn't touch 35 years - it was necessary to heat and beat out.
As a result 5 hours later the reducer is established, but the wheel remained "heavy".
To understand in what the reason, tie roads, the stabilizer were turned off and it became clear that front spindel of the right wheel is deformed that at turn of a wheel gives effort to torsion levers.
Verdict: its replacement next time.
Are also adjusted the valve, the compression in cylinders is measured, makes 8.2-8.3 atm depending on cylinders.
Also are replaced ignition system elements, wires and the coil, now ignition doesn't flow away, and gets on an electrode of candles because of what the car became more vigorous to run, tests showed 108 km/h at D-engine 34 hp and still there is a small stock, but there was no wish to force the old engine.
Next time we will replace a front right spindel and so on trifles, is what to be engaged, but speed doesn't influence generally.

Your original steering gear doesn't look to be worn out? The worm gear adjustment still has plenty of adjustment. What was wrong with it out of curiosity?

I found one of Antonio's pictures that show the part number (VW Brand):

The number shown will be cross referenced to another equivalent VW number (if you go to the dealer).

The open air roof grafted on late mexis is different from a factory ragtop of the 60s. I suspect kbrower is enquiring if the open air plastic surround somehow obstructs a rack install.

The roof frame (and roof) sit on top of the cut out area (maybe 1/2 inch or so), and then the roof will bunch slightly when operating (maybe another 1/2 or so), which reduce the clearance between a roof rack and the car. I've never thought to measure or photograph the car with that in mind. (And I'm away from my car for a few weeks).

Maybe post the question on the Mexican Beetle Open Air Facebook page, lots of owners of them are on that page and might be able to answer the question, or maybe even try it out:

cleaned all the interior... my garage has always been quite dry, now it started with some mold on the running boards and before I could notice it had extended to all the interior rubber-leatherette parts, some even on the seat belts... removed the protective seat covers, applied copious amount of protective spray on all leatherette/plastic/rubber surfaces, cleaned the the steering wheel cover and the OE overmats, sent the seat covers and overmats to be examined by my mother: if possibile I'll wash them, if not... they are cheap.

now I have everything clean, I'll let the smell of the protective spray evaporate overnight leaving the windows down, then tomorrow morning I'll put new moisture-absorbing salt inside and seal the car for a week. that should nail the mold inside the cabin.
