i want FI! i'm sick of my progressive and want that "start right up" reliability. after disassembling several FI engines through the years i'm pretty sure i have all the parts that go on or around the engine, but i know there are several things i need that i probably didn't know to grab at the time. from looking at past threds it looks like:
- air cleaner stand
- brain mounting
- gas pedal and linkage
- fuel pump?
- gas tank?
what else? _________________ '74 transporter panel

we can walk you thru it if you have the time to find parts for each step if you have none.
Start by pulling the engine, and if you don't have an FI tank, drain the old tank and find a good used one. New ones are about $400 shipped.
Set the engine aside. Clean the used tank and swap it with the carb one in your bus now. FI tanks have an inlet and an outlet. Don't forget the two screws under the firewall.
While you are getting the tank, keep an eye out for an ECU mount and an air cleaner mount. You'll want to weld the air cleaner mount in while the gas tank is out. Post when these things are done and we'll go to the next step. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

I'm going to be watching this thread, as I have two FI projects planned.
1) (The easy one.) Get my '79 Transporter back to FI and off the single carb that someone put on there.
2) Convert the '75 Pickup to FI. This is a bit harder, since it was not FI to begin with, and so will require the same modifications for mounting the ECU that the OP has. And, sadly, some PO actually cut out the air filter mount, so that will have to get redone.
With respect to #2, the pickup has a 1.8-L CB-class engine in it (with a nice recent top-end rebuild). Will this difference in displacement mean any modifications to an FI system that may have come from a 2.0-L system, or will it work just as well? (I do not want to put a '75 FI system on it, unless that is truly necessary).
I have had it with carburetors.
To the OP: Does this proposed FI modification apply to your '74 bus? _________________ John

One needs to be careful to get the angle of the mount correct. This is a rather nasty looking rig, but here are the angles.

John - If I had a 1975 I would use the later 2.0 FI. Worst case is you let Colin adjust the mixture. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

yep!
there's a '76 here in portland being parted that i'm going to see if i can get most of these parts off of. i have the regulator, but the relays and the resistor network i'd like to know more about. _________________ '74 transporter panel

The "S" isn't particularly forgiving of misalignment, plus there is not a lot of extra room to accommodate errors. |

one install i was looking at (rustbus or rustybus or something similar) seemed like he tack welded and then bolted his stand on. i feel like, from looking at your pictures, that to get a stand out one would have to saw the the thing out. would you then have to saw a hole in your own bus to get the new piece at the right angle? i don't know that i would be willing to go that far. _________________ '74 transporter panel
