Hello!
Some time ago I'm bought my first Karmann Ghia 64 from thesamba member (djghia - big thanks for cooperation ). Car was transported from Missouri to New York and then to Poland Thanks god car arrived in one piece - that was my first import from US but all went well - special thanks for Mark from NY - who took car from Missouri and help me send it to the Poland. Anyway Ghia looks cool engine start up with out any problem, works equally. Car is in more than 90% complete, the body seems to be in good condition not big rust (car was exposed to salt and sea air) body will need new paint in near future. Floor, chrome parts, tires are also in good condition. Some photos below more in near future.
Feel free to leave a comment also welcome guidance
Cheers!
Matt

Nice looking Ghia, especially if it is as rust free as you say!
Welcome to the forum, we look forward to seeing more of your Ghia.
What are your plans for it?
The previous owners thread was linked to yours, might as well link this one back to his?

Keep us updated as you renew and improve your new "Toy"!
Curious, and you don't need to answer this if you find it too forward or offensive but....... How much does it cost to transport and import a car from the USA to Europe? It seems to be done a lot lately.
Are there that few good examples in Europe that the best shopping location is in the States?

First I want do small amendment sheet metal and then paint all car and I will do it now or in November/December not sure yet. Because of this that I am a beginner after when I register a car I will ask local tinsmith and painter what they think about it. In future I will do complete repair for sure but first want save some money for it. Don't want do repair for five years. Think that better way is a save some money for repair and then do it in one shoot - what do You think ?
About import cost it is some like - pickup the car ( if car is in near coast then is a cheaper ) my was in Missouri so I had to bring car to port, then sea freight it is around $1100 and surcharges in Poland. I just paid 8% tax of the total value of the car and transport because car was imported as collector car. In normal way You must pay 23% tax, 10% of customs duty and 3,1% excise if the car engine has less then 2.0 in otherwise that be 18,6 %.
Regards

Another Karmann in Poland, the good news.
Enjoy the this car before it disassembles.
From experience with my budget for the renovation multiply times two.
Good luck with the repairs. _________________ GarbatePorsche

Below a few new photos.
If the floor will prove in good condition I would just repair the body and put new paint and for a few years will do a complete renovation - What do you think about it ? As I'm on beginner level - I don't think that car need for now complete renovation but we will see what tell tinsmith and painter.

the hazard warning light without flasher, is a light on the rear bumper operated by a switch under the dash near the steering column.
the light housing looks like the reverse lights that mount on the bumper brackets but has a red lens |

Have you any photo how it is looking ? Like you can see on photos I have reversing light - till now I thought that Ghias from 64 doesnt has reversing light - is it possible that it was any custom change on client request ? or this hazard light was in this place what is now reversing light ? or some like that... ? What with additional mirror ?
Regards

My 59 came with both the hazard light and the reverse light. The reverse light was the type that hooked to the back of the speedo. There was another type, done by dealers I believe, that activated at the rear shift rod coupler.
You should find a small hole under the dash near the steering column for the reverse switch. They look like a single pole light switch, or very close to a 50s VW wiper switch.
It was common practice in Germany to have an additional red light at the rear of the car that the driver could activate manually. I believe in some makes there you can still get that option on the vehicle. They are used in bad weather to make the car more visible. |

All of the Audis I have owned have come with rear fog lights.
It's kind of pointless to use it in the US though because everyone just tells you that one of your brake lights is stuck on. |

The hazard light switch would have been on the dash and would look something like this:
It didn't have separate lights as it blinked your existing tail lights. _________________ -Jared

@jpjohns - huh so isn't it like djway3474 wrote "operated by a switch under the dash near the steering column" ?
Never before saw this light and reversing light in Ghias 64 - but Certificate says that this car had it so from here my surprise. I know how it looks in younger cars, but like I said never saw it before in 64 Ghias so here maybe was applied another solution ?

This is not the blinking light switch of later years.
It simply turns on a red light which is held on to the bumper by a bracket that attaches by one of the bumper bolts. It does not have a hole in the blade.
I went out and rechecked my dash. I was mistaken on the location. It is just to the left of the air control vents. Mine is a 59 and yours may be different. What is that mounting tab to the right of your column? |
