|

I bought a lemon engine. It's been nothing but issues. Now its life is done. Will be looking for a replacement block then rebuilding. Will try to reuse as many parts as I can.
Any words of wisdom will be helpful. I won't know the exact cause until I pull it apart, but fairly obvious. Taking a short hiatus from it.
Engine seemed to be running smoothly. Lynn took it up the hill about 10km to the lake for a hike and started running lousy on the way back, backfiring and loss of power. The hole might not have happened if......
The rest is history. Not pleased.

Dang
looks like a broken rod went through the case.
It will be interesting to see which failed first.
seized piston? broken piston? melted piston?
rod bolt failed, or pulled out when the piston seized
broken rod.
case is probably hammered inside.
The wife had an old single port that had broken a rod with a seized piston, we were lucky it broke at the crank end and the rest of the rod was just laying at the bottom of the case still attached to the piston. It was still running and driving when we got a "rebuilt" from CIP to swap it, although it lacked some power _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

OUCH!!
I doubt much of that motor will be usable. When a rod lets loose, it usually takes the rest of the motor with it. beyond tins and accessories, you may have head cores, crank gears, push rods and rocker assemblies. . . I wouldn't use the oil cooler since it'll be full of metal. Everything else is likely to be either toast or worn-out anyway so you expect to replace it on rebuild anyway.
From rebuildable to door-stop in a nano-second. That sucks!
If it helps, I have a pretty extensive color coded parts list that is downloadable here:

Am thinking a rod snapped. It is very close to the center of the block. Then again, I've never had one of these blocks apart to make an educated guess. Just unfortunate that this happened only 4 blocks from home on a 20km round trip. I don't see it as fortunate, given I could have towed it home. Obviously there were probably audible indications prior to that which would indicate a serious issue. |

Great resource Nate and thanks. Will have to establish what I can and can't reuse and go from there. Pretty much everything within the block and the block itself will need replacement. That list is damn handy. |
