|
|
I just received a pair of new heads opened up for 94mm and no step.
Am I just drunk, or is that right side going to cause me grief with sealing the cylinders?
The other cylinder and head are fine, but this one isn't just visibly rough, but to the touch as well
I'm not bashing the vendor as they've been really good to deal with, and I'm waiting to hear back from them to see what to do next to resolve this. I just want to know what would cause that?

Let them correct the problem before you hang them out to dry, but that's all wrong. It's got nothing to do with you being drunk _________________ Robert Young

I agree, mistakes happen and I am not laying blame or naming names. I have no reason to believe it was anything other than an honest slip up. Just wanted to make sure this was an actual issue, thanks. |

either they cut with a worn tool, or they tried taking too much at one time, too fast _________________ My 1975 Beetle Build Updated 8-21-12

It's called chatter. Caused by non-rigid mounting of head or cutter, blunt tool, too sharp tool, too wide or deep a cut, lack of lubricant, bad chosen rpm for harmonics, worn spindle bearings......and probably a combination of more than one.
Just lap your jugs into your heads with a fine grinding paste until you get a nice shiny band. _________________ "...swingaxle...transaxle...same diff." |

Send it back to them and they should clean it up, it will only take 5 minutes _________________ 71 Super - Backroad Thrasher

I can't believe they sent them like that. Must have been dark or the QC guy was gone. |

Aggre.
But they should never have sent that one out. I too suggest that you let them correct the problem. they will need bothe heads to shim them the same amout so they are even.
It - can - be corrected the way Fastfill´s describing. But its not the way to do it on new part IMHO.

Lots of input here. Yeah, lapping would be ok for slight imperfections, and this is not one of those instances.
Like I said, no need to slag anyone. I'm sure the vendor will make good on this and it will get sorted. I only wanted to know what could have caused that in the first place. Go about your business, nothing else to see here |

Ditto... Markings are from cutting tool "chatter"....

Oh, come on! Easy to do - a few too many pints at lunch and need to get the job done before you can have a toilet break...
I certainly wouldn't try to lap that out. _________________ There has only ever been one man who was perfect, and they nailed Him to a cross. |

It's easy to make a mistake and ruin parts you are machining, but it's hard to understand why that would not get caught prior to shipping it out. _________________ Robert Young

Do you know how bad your vision can get if you drink half a dozen pints of beer quickly? _________________ There has only ever been one man who was perfect, and they nailed Him to a cross. |

Turns out that s#*! WILL buff out.
I decided to try lapping it, (why not, had the lapping compound handy) and it looks like that did the trick.
The vendor did offer to correct it or cover the machining cost to have it fixed locally, but I'm happy with how this turned out. Now about those beers...

Don't forget to lap the other bore to EXACTLY the same depth or you will have a loose cylinder |
