1776 built in 2009 by a retired VW shop owner. fouls out the plugs in about an hour. 85 PSI in all 4 cylinders. main jets 112.5, wideband sensor shows 12.5 AFM at idle and 14.7 at RPM _________________ 73 Beetle Baja, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 2220 ( 94 X 80 ), Weber Progressive, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

14.7 @ full load is too lean. Do a leak down test. |

85 pounds cranking ?= bad combination. Unless it is blowing blue smoke out the pipe and dripping oil out, then it might be the rings. _________________ There are no stupid questions, only stupid people,

no load, it barely idles. fouls brand new plugs in seconds. but no blue smoke, plenty black smoke _________________ 73 Beetle Baja, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 2220 ( 94 X 80 ), Weber Progressive, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

I ran a 1600 DP for at least 3 yrs at 90 lbs compression and then turboed it for a year without problems.
I quit using it because it developed a crack in the case behind the flywheel at #3 cylinder.
I never had any problems with how it ran...just that the crack was a half an inch away from the oil gallery.
Try a hotter set of plugs. _________________

If it's blowing black smoke, sounds like excess fuel. How's your spark strength from the coil? Rest of your ignition system in good shape? If it's misfiring at idle it'll read lean due to the unburned oxygen even if it's blowing fuel out the tailpipe. Cylinders could be washed with fuel giving poor ring seal and low compression readings. Any idea of cam and CR? Could be a tall deck low CR "oldschool" build. What plugs are you using now? _________________ Karl

112.5 is the smallest main jet made. can't go leaner. tried 3 Solex 34s with the same results.

35,000 volts, jumps a 1" gap in my tester

Your main jet should not be a factor at idle, right? Three carbs with same results, have you checked your fuel pressure? Can you look down the carb and see if it's just pouring fuel out of the float bowl vent down the barrel? 8:1 is pretty low CR for a 110 at that altitude. Not likely causing any problems other than limiting power a little. _________________ Karl

how many miles/hours on the engine? what have you actually done? removed heads to verify CR, etc? have you tested whole ignition circuit? could be flat lobes on the distributor, but that should be something you can pick up when checking point gap
no offense but its like you want us to solve a 100 piece puzzle with only 50 pieces
what are the actual specs, like distributor, timing, heads, intake(sounds like single 34pict-3?)
how are the idle jets, and idle screw? main jets not really an issue until 3500 with no load, and you sound like you contradicted yourself
