Recently purchased an 85 Vanagon (Bubble top, water-cooled, Digijet) and both the Bentley repair and owner manuals that came with it were for prior years. Not too concerned about the owners manual (1983) as everything seems to more or less match up, but wondering if I'll eventually butcher something badly by using the 80-84 Bentley repair manual for my 85 van?

The 83 1/2 thru 85 models are very close to being the same. If your 85 has a manufacture date of Aug 1, 1985 or later it would be an 86 model which has quite a few differences from the 85 and earlier models.

I'm doubtful anyone would be able to tell the difference in the 2 years.

Did the new sliding door show up in '85 or '86?

I would have preferred that version of the Bentley to the one I have -- the comprehensive later version has much more info & pictures that have nothing to do with me & my 84 (Syncro, Digifant, etc).

I do wonder about yours having an 83 owners manual with it -- that is an odd thing to have happen. You may want to examine your VIN and confirm that you do indeed have an 85 and not an 84 or 83½.
