I just finished the last part of my conversion to a Triple Knob Syncro from a non locker and was wondering how many others are out there and if you really think it is worth all the expense to out fit your Syncro this way. And do you use yours much?

I have seen a couple others. I was just curious.
I am hoping this would be an appealing upgrade if I ever sell it. But like most things I do, I never get back what I paid for them, well, most of the time. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia Hightop - NAHT

Soon as matts done with my tranny, u can count me in.
Hold on, I suppose a tranny already has three knobs...no I'm not from Trinidad, Co. I should say transaxle
If any seattle folks are bored and wanna lend a hand wrangling the damn thing back in I'd appreciate it. I've never done a clutch or slave before and would like a little moral support from someone who has.

What is that middle part of your above the synchro indicator and the top of your dash. Is that stock? What do the two knobs do? |

Looks like an aftermarket A/C unit . Very tidy indeed .
Two 3 knob Syncro's in my driveway . Only used one of them once . But my new Westy has not been on the trail yet ,so time will tell .

I have a triple knob. I love the decoupler and engage the middle knob when on gravel or dealing with snowy weather. Worth the $1k investment and by now has probably paid for itself in fuel savings (99% of the time I run decoupled).
The lockers do get used, but pretty rarely. My van came from the factory with the rear, but a PO had the front locker installed at great expense. I don't think I would be very happy if I paid for this directly out of my pocket since it gets used so rarely. _________________ previous:

I'll bet around 25 of the 100+ syncros that show up at SyncroFest are triple knob. But that's a concentration of syncro freeks.
I have 5 of them in my shop right now. Ok a couple are not "triple knob" vans as they do not have a decoupler but have front and rear lockers. It's pretty common on the european syncros to have both lockers. Especially the 16s. _________________ Please do not message me on TheSamba. Use my email, [email protected] |

I'm missing the middle knob but if/when I ever have the trans gone through I'll probably add it then. I may never need all three but mine came factory with front and rear lockers. _________________ '88 SCA High/Pop-top Syncro camper

FWIW, you can add a decoupler in a afternoon without going through the tranny at all.
I have 5 1/2 knobs in my two syncros, the front locker may or may not go in the truck so it loses 1/2 knob |

I have a triple as well, but only was able to free up the front a week ago during a snow storm in PDX.
I think that the best thing one could do with their syncro is to put in the de-coupler... night and day difference. _________________ SF
