check to see if you didn't happen to hook up the coil to one of the circuits such as the headlights which are disabled when the ignition is turned to start (ever notice when you crank a bug with the headlights turned on they go off when the starter is cranking?)

Has your ignition switch been replaced recently?

Specifically the terminal labeled "X" on the ignition switch is on with the key in the Run position but turns off when the key is in the Start position.

I'm thinking the same as jhoefer, test at the fuse box for power at the black (#15) ignition circuits. There should be 12v here while the ignition is in the ON and START positions. You didn't indicate what model year your car was. If it has a 10-fuse fuse box, these ignition circuits will be fuse #1 & #2. If a 12-fuse fuse box, the ignition wires are fuse #11 & #12.

If you have an "X" circuit (black/yellow wire at fuse box from '72 onward) on the later model years, fuse #10 (of 12) is powered from the "X" circuit. It should have 12v while the ignition switch is ON, but no powered while ignition switch is in START position.
Do NOT use this circuit to power the ignition coil !

This is not uncommon when the #15 circuit from the ignition switch fails, POs will tap the "X" to power the coil and this sometimes works. The engine will not start while the engine is cranking, but at the instant the key is released to fall back to the ON position the engine is still spinning and the coil is powered and it catches.
