Poor idling...step on gas pedal and nothing happens?

My '84 Vanagon sat in my driveway over the winter. I charged the battery, and it fired up. Drove around town a little, then reparked it. Next time I started it a few days later...it started but idled very poorly, and no increase in rpm's when throttle is increased? Actually, it seems to make the idle worse when gas pedal is pressed. I replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, and O2 sensor. No improvement. Fuel relay?

Water in the gas?? try to get some fresh fuel into it and see if that helps. Good luck.

I like dan's suggestion- actually describes the symptoms my mower was having yesterday, air intake was clogged with grass clippings.

Well, you all were close...my issue was the Air Flow Meter. Runs like a champ now. Contact Utah Imports in SLC, UT, if you ever need an expert older VW issue resolved.
