I was changing my spark plugs and decided, since it's so much easier to replace the #1 spark plug if I remove the filter box and AFM, to look at the throttle body and clean it. I'd forgotten that in 2005 the VW dealership, while troubleshooting a rough idle problem, found a hole in the butterfly. They sealed it with silicon, see photos:

The van is running fine with the filled hole, but I wonder if there is supposed to be a hole in it.

Your throttle body looks like a 1.9 with the single TPS on the bottom, there should not be a hole in the throttle plate on this model.

Interesting.

My 84 with a 1.9L and the double TPS on top of the throttle body has the hole. No idea when it was correct or why it is there.

No idea why the change but many of the earlier air-cooled throttle bodies with the brass throttle plate had the hole as well as the early 1.9 double switch with the flat brass throttle plate. The hole was omitted on the throttle bodies with the cast aluminum throttle plate although I have seen several cast throttle plates that someone has added a hole and usually plugged it with a sheet metal screw.

Mine does have the single TPS on the bottom. The van left the factory in 10/84. There must have been some old throttle plates in the box at the factory when they put my throttle body together.
