What are these?

I converted my 84-westy to Bostig v2/G10 in Jan 2010. I didn't have any wrench turning skills and have been learning every since.

However, what the heck were these? I feel like they are heat-shields from the exhaust in the back.

But I didn't know anything about anything back then and this was probably once of the first things I did.</idiotdisclaimeroff>

if you look at the frame rail around the engine bay, from underneath, you will see where they were, i don't think you need them anymore.

I had to lie on my back, drip some oil in my eyes and pretend they were dirty -- then, yeah, I recognized them.

I've been down there a couple times in earnest to figure it out. I just can't get any orientation that makes sense. Maybe because the bostig cradle covers what I can't visualize.

Engine splash guard. View is looking from RL forward toward FR.
Page 2b4 if you have a Haynes manual.

I think in your picture the left one is the left, with the grommet for the O2 sensor wire and they are facing forward (90° bend toward the front).

Thank you very much for the help. I'll get under there as soon as my overalls are dry and see if I can still use them. Your additional information on the orientation will be invaluable. Thanks again.

These are useful even with a conversion.
I had to trim mine to fit the VW G60 conversion on our van.

No Problem. Glad I am getting to the point of being able to help once in a while instead of only starting the "how do I do this?" threads!

They are very useful for keeping water from being splashed all over the engine.
