I was inspired by curtis4085's work and bus porn picture:
Rather than jump right to the bus porn, I decided to document the foreplay. I'm doing the same areas
In addition, since my tranny and engine are out, I'm also doing the area above the tranny and below the gas tank.
I started the process and I'm waiting for my POR15 stuff to arrive.

I'll update with pics when I'm done. _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

That's a great start. Ask DB... Lots more prep to be done. If your engine is pulled...get her media blasted. I have extensive experience with POR products. It's a effing nightmare if done incorrectly or bomb proof if done properly. |

I will be brushing it on. The stuff is a nightmare to spray given that it is difficult to remove any overspray.
Still have to do some more prep, followed by degreasing and metal ready per the POR15 directions. I've used the stuff before including in my gas tank and I love it.
I'm going to repaint my engine compartment first, so it may be a little while before an update. _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

Be sure to use rubber gloves when using that POR-15....or you will hate yourself. |

From their website, "POR-15 is sensitive to UV light (sun) and must be topcoated before prolonged exposure to sunlight".
If you don't it may peel. _________________ "You can lead an aircooled to water, but you can't make it drink"

It won't peel but it sure won't look all nice and shiny. Post a pic 6 months after you are done. |

I'm not sure how much sun exposure the suspension and undercarriage will see.

Do you really think those areas will be affected by reflective light? _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

It will lose that gloss, even without direct sunlight. Sure looks good when it is first done though. What do they recommend as a top coat? |

Do you know this for sure? Are you saying that it loses the gloss and fades from just the passage of time? _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

POR-15 will lose the shiny gloss over time due to ultraviolet rays...it it not meant to be a final top coat unless you don't mind the faded look after a while...I painted my brand new Jeep CJ5 body tub with POR-15 both on the underside and the topside...all painting was done with a brush in the hot summer sun, and it came out fantastic...no drips and no brushmarks...it just blended together to a glossy black finish...after a few months it began to fade slightly...I scuffed the surface with my D/A sander which wasn't easy, because POR-15 dries rock solid...like epoxy....then I sprayed it with Rust-O-Leum Hunter Green enamel....This will never rust in my lifetime....POR-15 makes a grey/silver color as well as exhaust paints...get their products application pamphlet at NAPA. |

My Por15 stayed glossy on my 64 Chevy truck chassis for the 4 years I owned it. I also coated my cab behind the seat and under and it was glossy as well. Not sure how it holds up to direct sunlight. Definitely wear the gloves or you'll be stuck with painted hands for a few weeks! _________________ 1970 Westfalia Campmobile - SF Bay Area

The times I used it, it didn't stay glossy. It faded and lost it's gloss, even where the sun didn't shine. Well, we have someone here to run a test.

All kidding aside, this is an email directly from the makers of POR15:
"Ticket status: Completed
Department: General
Subject: POR15
As long as the surface you are coating is not going to be exposed to direct sunlight you would not have to topcoat the POR-15.
Sincerely,
Absolute Coatings, inc." _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

If you do decide to top coat it, spray it with primer when it is just tacky and won't stick to your finger. Let cure then paint. I did this on my window sills. |

Great advice. That's what I did on my battery trays. _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

Just be careful there aren't any areas that the POR could have pooled slightly thicker (easy in low points or corners) when you prime, otherwise you'll get large bubbles which need to be taken back down to bare metal. I got a bunch of these when I did my sliding door track and around the the rear hatch _________________ 1975 Westfalia - http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=516701 |
