Has anyone managed to get this size spare into the front well? I know 215/65-16 fits easily and 215/75-15 can be made to go as well. I would like to get some 215/70-16 tires but I refuse to have an external spare holder. If anyone has done it please share what must be done to make one of these fit up there.

thanks,
Mark

It will NOT fit. Just won't fit in the hole. 20 gallon head in a 10 gallon hat. I've tried, and now I have a RMW rear spare tire carrier on my Syncro, and love it.
I'm not sure if you can take the air out and grease it and squeeze it up there. Smile

I've read some posts on here recently about using a 17" doughnut type spare - I think it was from an Audi or something like that.

Sorry but I wouldn't have any rear spare carrier if they were giving them away and installing them for free. I must have 5 exactly matching tires and the spare needs to go in the front well. That is my way. Others can do things their way.

Get your plasma cutter out! I like it when I'm told I can't do something. It motivates me to try harder. Good luck. Cool

Not a 215, but a similarly sized 205/75-16 Nokian on a CLK wheel is deflated and shoehorned in using the VC oversize spare carrier. It's finicky to get into place, and don't forget a good compressor, but it's in there.

In theory it should fit. Same 215 width, 5% lower aspect ratio is 21.5mm shorter, 1inch taller rim means only 3.5mm taller overall. The 215/75 fit IIRC without deflating by lowing the rear hinge bolts with 1.5" U-bolts and a spacer and longer bolt up front, and of course the wire tensioners removed. 3.5mm is so little, it "seems" like it should fit. 'Course you aren't looking for speculation.

Yes, I'm willing to do that to some degree if someone else has done so for that size and can share the extent of the cutting needed.

may be it will fit if you deflate it and carry a 12V air pump?

235/70r16 definitely does not hits lots of frame. Impossible even for a hack like me.

No swing away carrier for me either. I'm going extreme and cutting in and fabricating a spare compartment in the wall on the drivers side wall. Fabbing all the reinforcement superstructure for the door now. The original outer skin will be the skin for the door. Will post pics when done. Will be under the heading Out in left field spot for spare tire. Should be pretty cool.

Mark,
I'm with you when it comes to not weighing down the rear of the van with extra weight and I do not like the look of a van with "stuff" hanging all over it.

The coolant lines, the rubber or silicone Wink , whichever you may have will need to be relocated.
Not a huge ordeal by any means, but as you are aware vans had different configurations depending upon if they came with alloys or not.

The frame rails could be cut back with plasma and reinforced to provide the room.

The Corter van is on my hoist right now and IIRC it has that tire size on CLKs.
It is getting the GW front skid, but before it is installed I will make some measurements and see just how much metal needs to be trimmed.

I carry large spares in the front section of the Westy roof, but having a tiptop carry that size stowed in front would be very nice indeed.

It's a fact of life--you cannot put 2 lbs. of Ca-Ca into a 1lbs. pound hole.
Period.
Not without major surgery.
Can your size 12 foot fit into a size 6 shoe?
Nope.

You'll spend more time hacking up the spare tire well, manufacturing some sort of Rube coolant hose set up to the radiator , than it's worth.

Your going to have to go with an odd ball spare set up, or toss the 215 up onto the roof, or inside of the Van, seeing as your not wanting to mount a spare tire bracket.

Saw's All, torch, nibbler, grinder, cut off wheels ,welder, etc. or whatever metal working tools you have laying around and the know how on how to re-engineer that compartment.
Ain't gonna happen.

Thanks for the useless "information". The tire in question is only 2% larger than tires I already have up there. Hardly 2lbs into a 1lb. My quest was for someone who had successfully put that specific size up there or tried hard and failed. I guess there is no such person yet.

I'm sorry it seems that the 225 70 r14's I run on will not fit into my clam shell.

And you're running 15 inch wheels & 215's?
Break out the sawzall& the flexable PVC tubing for them radiator hoses.

I never tried anything like this.
Don't have any idea.

I've tried it, I spent a ton of time, I even cut up one of my cadaver vans as a prototype. I had to remove too much metal. I would not be comfortable with the structural integrity of my van after I was done. I know what I know from lessons caught rather than taught.

I was being facious with that reply.

Giving the fact I'm running just over sized tires
I'll put it plain & simple.

Without major surgery that 15" wheel,& oversized tire ain't gonna go in that hole Joe.

Been there, seen it, tried it.

Excluding cutting up a second clam,& doubling the original one up.
But there goes your front end ground clearance

Toss the spare up on the roof -—or use a space saver.

I have been running sets of 5 wheels with 215/75-15 tires on my 2wd and Syncro vans for 15 years now. I always carry the spares in the front well and did not have to cut anything but it is a very tight fit. The hoses didn't need anything. Now I want to go to 215/70-16, not quite 2% larger. I expect to have to trim some metal. The question is where and how much would it take.

Its not exactly what you are looking for but...

Modified subframe and spare tire clam shell to fit 215-65-16
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=506025&highlight=

If you lived closer, we could have tried your tire in my modified clam shell.

I looked on tirerack.com and they stated for a similar michelin tire like mine its a 27 inch diameter. If you have a bfg all terrain 215-75-15, tirerack says its a 27.8 inch diameter tire. I believe that 27.8 inch will fit my modified clam shell as there is some play with my 27 inch tire. You just gotta have to live with a one inch ground clearance loss...

edit
Just mismatch your numbers and forgot you are looking for a 215-70-16 and that is a 28 inch tire... Mmmm... Thats getting pretty thigh! Would need to try, but i have no tire that size laying around...
