Question... have any of you removed the window to have it tinted, and have any of you tinted only down to the metal portion?

The reason I ask is I went to a very reliable place to get a quote, and the guy is very proud of his work (does NBA players rides etc). He does not want to tint down to the metal on the inside of the latching window. He would like to have the entire window tinted (bottom red arrow) Plus there is the over lap part of the windows.

Any opinions or pics on how you did yours? How big of a PITA is it to remove the window from the rail and re-install?

I just had my windows tinted by a guy who has tinted many Vanagons specifically. He did not remove the window, and had to cut around the latches, etc. All of this he pointed out to me prior to install. He said the windows could be removed if I wanted them, but that I would have to do it as he didn't want to take the responsibility of broken glass. In the end, I really didn't care I just wanted the windows tinted in a cost effective manner that looked good. Personally, I think the only person who is even going to notice a difference is you.

X2^^

My tinting guy did the same, then used some sort of touch-up pen to darken around the latches and other areas where he couldn't quite get. He then put some sort of dull-ish black tape on the outside to cover up the overlap where he couldn't reach and it looks great. The tape might eventually peel, but its hung in there fine so far after a hot summer and cold winter, so I'm hopeful.

I remove my sliding window with two big spreader/clamps. Its was pretty nerve wreaking at the beginning but it was pretty fast once i know the right technique. I don't think you can remove the melt piece, even if you can it will rip the tint off once you try to slide the metal piece back in.

Also if you plan to take the sliding window out, make sure make some wood block to fit the channel. I bent one side of the sliding window channel when i was spreading it apart. a wood block will spread the load better.

this is what i use:

Thank you gentleman... I will go forward with tinting down to the metal (scared poopless to remove frame!) I like the marker idea too...

Thanks for the vid, but he was missing his plastic guides which gave him more room... still a lot of work Wink

Now I just need to remove the rear cabinet and set a time... woot! Very Happy

The shop that did mine was able to do the rear driver window well without removing the closet. Tricks of the trade I guess. I reccommend removing the latches completely before its done and the outcome will be super clean. Its easy, there is a vid on the gw site for their latch kit. It is also worth completely removing the triangle windows and their latches to avoid radically misaligned hole tracings. I paid 450 for 5% ceramic all around and am impressed with the outcome.

Mine is tinted the same, down to the metal piece and, a piece of black tape on the outside where the windows overlap... they didn't pop out the windows.
Looks great 2+ years later. They also did the closet window without removing the closet, no problem.

I'd do it all again in a heartbeat but, I've been afraid to slide open my windows ever since... Rolling Eyes

I went with SunTek CXP for tint.

Tape it is! Very Happy

I'm getting some good stuff (allegedly) Owner pointed to his storefront windows that have been tinted for 7 years with direct sun on them and no issues... plus I have seen his work, so I feel good about not having purple windows in a few years *insert crossed fingers here*

The guy that did my car used to own a Vanagon and refused to do my windows unless I have them taken out. He said, "you won't be happy with them b/c they won't look good". I said, "faded car seats & interiors don't look good, that bothers me more than imperfect tinting". LOL

If the windows come out, then the cabinet has to come out. I don't want my cabinet taken out b/c then it'll make more noise when it goes back in. So, I do not have tinted windows. Sad And, that is how they have to stay.

I put some sun shades in:
http://www.amazon.com/Britax-Pack-EZ-Cling-Shades-...=sun+shade

I tried these first, couldn't get them flat. They didn't look good:

Put your big boy pants on and Pull the glass out, it's not hard at all.

1.)Break a #2 pencil in half
2.)push the glass up and insert pencil into channel an rest glass on it
3.)use a soft piece of wood-rested on top of channel, gently tap channel down
4.)once channel is loose the glass will pop right out

It looks so much better done right. Takes about 5 min per side.

While your at it u can replace the felt also!

I had my windows tinted while the frames were out for paint. Having the whole glass covered is the way to go.
One guy here did have his window frames anodized black. I wanted to do this but did not have the time to get it done. Westy window frames are already anoded. They would have to strip it off first before reanodizing. This is the only thing I regret not getting done while getting my paint.
See how the alumium color stick out some on my van.

^^ Thanks for posting... I can't stand having the aluminum frames on my gangrene beast, hopefully at some point I will get that fixed. I plan on blacking out the entire window/body area. So along with the tint it would look cool, but not with the frames as is.

X2 on what he did. You take one end of the clamp off and reverse it so it is a spreader instead of a clamp.

I had my rear windows pulled out to replace the seals and tint, and put in a later model window vent. It went well, but I did remove the thin outer wood piece that is right against the window within the closet. I went limo tint, so you can't really see in there anyway, so have not missed it.

3 vans, no stinking clamps were ever needed. Maybe just me and my MAN hands.
